...anyone who's read the books want to talk about the film? :)

I found fancy-looking compilation of a couple Holmes stories in the basement a while ago and was surprised how much I really enjoyed them. I keep reminding myself to read more. Now I'm going to get around to checking amazon.com for some of people's favorite earlier adaptations to see what they're like.

Deary deary me. :D

Point proven, thank you.  Carry on being smug and complaining about things that you can't change.

Yeah the stories are generally pretty good really. :) Sadly, Doyle's other work often isn't up to the same quality level, though I still like to read a lot of that.

I'm actually hoping that, while I don't think either movie will especially increase the public demand for the stories, they will encourage some publishing houses to bring out some new editions, and maybe bring W. S. Baring-Gould's biography of Holmes back into print (and in fact his other Holmes work too if that's possible, I have the devils own job finding them). :)

As for adaptations, the ones featuring Jeremy Brett as Holmes are generally considered top notch, plus there was(/is?) a series of adaptations made in Russia that are supposed to be great. I've watched that series version of The Hound of the Baskervilles* and it was pretty well done. Had to watch it on youtube since I couldn't find a source for it on DVD or Video..

*And it's another version of that which features Ian Hart as Watson.

Oh and I finally found the answer, or at least an answer to this

QuoteThe basis for the film is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales, but also the comic book "Sherlock Holmes."

Say what now  ???

I tried to find out what that is exactly and I'm banjaxed. The only one I could think of is this:

But somehow I think it is probably something a little more recent and quirky.

I was in my local Android's Dungeon and I saw a third issue of a Holmes comic, the bloke there said the first and second would be coming in as reprints. That's possibly the comic referred to in the article. :)

Shinigami

From what I can tell from the previews they are turning Holmes into House M.D. which I find kind of odd.

Yes, House is based on Holmes in the first place, but still.

Play it out right to the end.

Yes House was based on Holmes at the start but he became his own character a long time ago,I really wish they were not using the name Sherlock Holmes for this movie.

I sincerely hope you don't think you're referring to me.

Ok so here are the covers:

I was flipping through the first issue while waiting to film last Monday and it's, well, it's OK, I'll reread it but it's not stellar.

Trumpysgirl

Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Yeah, they look awesome, I mean I like the visual aspects very much in some places, but in practice they're closer to passable.

I don't know maybe it picks up in part three.

Aaand we're back.

Screw RDJ and Receeding Hairline, this is the Holmes story that promises to be the most awesome version yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doctor Who?

This is going to be a painful winter for someone who has been a Holmes fan since he was a kid isn't it?

Tripe

Like the sort of pain Julia Stoner felt just before she told her sister about the speckled band. ;)

Doctor Who?

While the hound of the Baskervilles is clamping down on your throat.
