Not necessarily. The Moopets weren't Muppets, even though they were the same "species".

I'm pretty sure that "muppet" is the name of the species (or whatever it would be called) in that universe. It's called The Muppet Show because of that. The Moopets is just a stage name to be a ripoff of a group that calls itself the Muppets with a capital M. Plus, calling them The Feebles would have been confusing to most people, and brought on real world legal issues.
And I'm pretty sure that we have already put way more thought into this than intended.

Not even close check out this interview with Jason segal

Also note how he points out the muppets dont think of themselves as muppets but as people.

Correction:  This might be the interview I meant.

Surprised I missed that. I've been listening to NPR and a lot of the Muppet Channel XM Radio. Those were good interviews.

Saw the movie last Friday... as others have said... it's a nice little love note to the old 70s TV Series. While this is no Great Muppet Caper, there isn't a whole lot not to like. A good amount of laughs and a few fun songs are about all you need to not fall on your face in a Muppet movie, and this one delivers in those areas. I suppose you could say the villain was a bit undercooked... and suffering a closed head injury at the end was probably a bit lame compared to the script actually giving him some redemption...  which would probably be more in line with what Henson would have done, being a better message for the youngins... and there were a few moments where I started getting annoyed by all the Segel face time as the Muppets themselves sorta drifted into support roles... but minor complaints overall. Like I said, it's no Great Muppet Caper or The Muppet Movie... but it's a cute tribute to the old TV show... Better treatment then I thought Disney would have given a new theatrical release.

Lotta fourth wall breaking and ridiculous improbabilities and randomness.

Yeah, it's almost like it was a Muppet movie or something! :P

I've never seen any Muppets things before (except the animated Muppet Babies series from the 80s), so I didn't have any frame of reference or know what to expect.
This movie is more a love letter to the original show and earliest movies. If you liked it at all, I would defintely recommend watching the first movie and The Muppet Show as you will probably like them even more.
I dunno.  It wasn't bad, but the silliness and the constant fourth wall breaking got old after a while.  I just wanted them to stop and be serious and normal, if just for a minute or two.

Saw it on Friday.  I loved almost every inch of this movie.  It wasn't as strong on a second viewing (first time I saw it with family, the second) but I think that Frank Oz was way off in saying that it didn't "capture the Muppet spirit."  It's definitely not a perfect movie but that works in it's favour in a way as that is the muppet spirit: it's about people who aren't exactly the best entertainers (but still good ones) who just want to put out the best show they can and entertain people, which they do at the end of the day.  None of the muppet movies are perfect and they shouldn't be.  Well, at least not technically (and when I say technically, I just mean the nuts and bolts of storytelling and such.  The puppets always look great).  Emotionally, they (well, maybe not some of the later ones, which I've never seen) work very well and you are too invested in the characters to question any issues.  It's like the fact that in the movie Jaws that the way the shark dies is impossible, but Speilberg basically said that if they are with the movie from the beginning, they won't care.  It's about what works emotionally, not technically.

Also, I think all of the original musical numbers are great.  I was one of the few who didn't care much for the previews (especially the TV spots, though the first fake out preview was good) because they used the worst bits or took funny bits and took out the context that made them funny.  But despite the fact that I was excited despite the previews (too many despites?) I was worried that there would be too many "now" pop culture references that would be unpleasant groaners.  The closest thing is the chickens singing Cee Lo's Fuck You (Pluck You?), which wasn't great but wasn't embarrassing.  But those original songs are terrific, especially "Pictures in my Head" which almost had me tear up.  I thnk they hit the Rainbow Connection a little hard (though I LOVE that song), but it works every time they use it (though a powerful original song might have been nice).  Still, Fozzie's sell out version was super-awesome.

Oh my God, I just realized this film might give us an excuse to see Amy Adams singing at the Oscars again!  For those who remember, previously 2 songs from Enchanted (a so/so movie that Amy Adams completely made her own with her super-awesome performance as a Disney Princess) where nominated and where performed.  One was a bland, and overproduced love song with dancers and costumes and cheorgraphy and yawn.  Then Amy Adams, by herself, with just her and the music came out.  And it was magic!  Sadly I can't find the video, but this one at least has the sound, but man, it was fantastic compared to any other performance that song.  Pretty damn good for a "Whistle While You Work" homage/spoof.

EDIT:

FOUND IT!

Beaker is always awesome. Surprised he didn't make it on the Top 50 Second Bananas list.

My favorite is probably Life's A Happy Song, as featured in this video:

Official count of times I could have cried during this movie...two. One was hearing Rainbow Connection again, the other was seeing the picture of Jim Henson on Kermit's office wall.
