Am I the only one who doesn't mind the Sonic design? It just...looks like Sonic. Meh. It certainly doesn't look scary.

For me the issue is with the mouth area, especially the teeth.  Also, why couldn't they just give him gloves?

It's the eyes for me, but I recognize that Sonic's big continuous eyeball would be problematic in live-action. Megaman had a similar problem with his new TV show:
