At first I thought it was Deathstalker 1 and 2 but now I think it's the spinoffs,

Wizards of the Lost Kingdom.
Plus there's a 2.

On a MST3K facebook page some were speculating that is why RiffTrax pulled their Wizards of the Lost Kingdom....

Interesting theory.

The timeframe is about right. The riff was pulled in early March and the Kickstarter page says as of February, Joel had negotiated the rights for about half of the films he wanted to do.

Not sure if I buy it, though. If the film was in the public domain, both riffing projects would be able to do their thing with no conflicts. If it wasn't, Rifftrax would have (Or at least should have) acquired the necessary rights to distribute it, and would still have no problem releasing the Riff with no conflicts (I'm pretty sure, at least. I'm no copyright lawyer). The only reason I could see for everything to go down like it did was if Rifftrax thought they had something public domain, and didn't.

I guess it's possible that Rifftrax did their thing and Joel, planning to release his own riff, asked them nicely to take it down so they weren't stepping on each other's toes, but since Rifftrax had already invested in the production and release of the VOD, that would be a pretty pricey favor.

Well, the story seems to be that while the the movie is public domain, the soundtrack isn't. So if SHOUT paid for the soundtrack, they would have the rights. Possibly SHOUT alerted Rifftrax to the fact that actually they weren't legally able to riff it as they were holding the rights for the soundtrack, but it's a shame, if that were they case, a deal couldn't have been worked out. Maybe it will be after the new season drops?

Assuming Netflix do their usual thing and drop all of the episodes at once, I don't know why they would bother guarding the titles anyway? We'll know the complete listing right away. Eh.

Apparently we aren't going to get the new MST3K episodes until next year? I was hoping it would be by the end of this year, preferably around Thanksgiving because there's a Turkey Day episode.
