It is IMDB, so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that list. I'd be surprised if Joel would allow someone on the show to put those there. Seems like he'd rather keep them as a surprise.

He can only keep them underwraps for so long.  I would imagine that there are many people beyond the show production that have access to that list. There is probably people at Netflix that would need that info before too long.

If it is a fake list then why not put a title in for Episode 1? Conversely if it is a real list...why no episode 1?

A lot of those titles are already under Shout's control.

No way it's the animated one, esp since there's no sequel.
I wonder if they had to change the titles to get the rights? That's happened a few times in the past. With the side benefit of keeping the movies a mystery if this list is legit.

Interesting theory.

The timeframe is about right. The riff was pulled in early March and the Kickstarter page says as of February, Joel had negotiated the rights for about half of the films he wanted to do.

Not sure if I buy it, though. If the film was in the public domain, both riffing projects would be able to do their thing with no conflicts. If it wasn't, Rifftrax would have (Or at least should have) acquired the necessary rights to distribute it, and would still have no problem releasing the Riff with no conflicts (I'm pretty sure, at least. I'm no copyright lawyer). The only reason I could see for everything to go down like it did was if Rifftrax thought they had something public domain, and didn't.

I guess it's possible that Rifftrax did their thing and Joel, planning to release his own riff, asked them nicely to take it down so they weren't stepping on each other's toes, but since Rifftrax had already invested in the production and release of the VOD, that would be a pretty pricey favor.
