Hey, Sarcasm, you neo-con bastard!!!  How you doin', man?

Hey, wasn't it in his epistle to the Corinthians in which Paul said, "Faith is the EVIDENCE of things hoped for, the SUBSTANCE of things unseen..."?  That's a powerful statement, my friend.  That means if you believe in something strong enough, it makes it true... no?

I didn't care for the movie, personally. It's an interesting story, whether you believe it or not (I don't), so I would've thought that it would be easy to make a good movie out of it. Alas, Mel botched it. In the end, it was just a massive guilt trip to try to win converts and (perhaps) demonize Jews.

/Just my opinion. Please don't stone me.

no i dont really think it does, what verse in corinthians and what was the verse before and after so i can get it less out of context.

Hebrews 11:1-3

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.  By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."

I really don't understand your reasoning Randy.  What are you getting at?  You are agreeing with Christ, and yet not agreeing with Christ at the same time?  As I believe C.S. Lewis put it, you can't have Jesus Christ as a moral teacher without believing that he was indeed what he claimed.  If that claim is not true then all his teachings, every thing he said is worthless!  He would have been a lunatic that died for his insanity!  Either that or his power truly did come from Satan as the Pharisees claimed.

You cannot make a whole by taking parts from other things, it becomes a frankenstein's monster of belief and dies easily.  The foundation of Christianity isn't Christ's moral teaching but on his death and resurrection.  It was his claim of divinity that gives credence to his moral teachings.  Again if that claim is false, then the presence of the Holy Spirit I have felt is from Satan, and as Paul said I have blasphemed God by saying that He resurrected a man that was not resurrected.  I have gambled my soul for this promise, and the consequence is either eternal life or death.  That is what it means to be a Christian. Buddhism, Taoism, and other Eastern belief systems are religions based on a man's moral teachings.

If I'm off center by this, I'm just trying to understand you, and partly teaching what I feel to be truth.

I'm respecting your belief, my friend.  But like I said before, I believe what Ghandi said, "All paths lead to God".

Also, I'm saying that the historic Jesus doesn't matter.  The only thing that matters is how YOU feel about Him.  Don't you agree?

No, actually.  If Christ is not what he claimed, then I will die for it still.  Whether I believe or not that he is the Messiah, the Christ, matters nothing if I go to Hell for it.  What we do now has eternal reprecussions, and if we follow a lie than we go into that eternity still believing in that lie.  We would be the children following the Pied Piper to our doom and slavery.

If "All paths lead to God" then He is a two-faced liar and I want nothing to do with Him then.  However, because I have seen God fulfill what He has said on the small "ifs" then I can trust in Him to believe that very big "if" on Christ's claims.  God doesn't want us to believe Him blindly and still live our lives as usual, but to seek Him and listen for His voice.  He doesn't want slaves, but servants.  The historic Jesus matters because it is all a lie otherwise, and I am not a fool to believe a lie.

I respect religious beliefs as well, but I don't have to agree with them and support them.

heh... funny movie.

Somewhat naively I didn't expect this to turn into another thread about christians.

And, if He would send you or me (or anyone) to Hell, I don't want anything to do with Him.   ;)

Eh... let it drift, my friend.  We both love God in our own way.  If I go to Hell, eh... I'll have a lot of friends there.

What?  I wanna spend eternity with Pat Robertson?

(I'm kidding!  I kid, the fundamentalists...)

People debate their point of views because they enjoy their POV.  What is the point of an interest, profession, or belief if you don't enjoy it?  If you slog through the days hating one or all of those three things, then a change has to be made.  Our lives are too short to be unhappy.  That is why I respect it, though I don't accept most forms because of how short that happiness is with that POV.  I wish to see people take the POV with eternal happiness because I know that it is true.

Proselytizing without love for the other is mere status building and worthless in eternity.

EDIT:  To Randy, this also says why I utterly hate that reasoning.  We send ourselves to Hell because we take up Hell into ourselves as we are to do with Heaven.  Your worth is far more than that.

AmandaGal

At least the people on this board argue nicely about their beliefs (from what I've seen anyway.  I admit I zone out of most of the Christian love debates...I did pick up a CS Lewis book from the library the other day because you dudes ALWAYS talk about him.  I figured maybe I was missing something.  Anyway, back to my original point, most boards I've been on when religion comes up it turns into a day modern day Crusades, lots of blood, lots of hate, lots of idiots.  At least here, it's not like that (maybe...is there a blood shed Christian post I'm missing?).

To be a little more tactile than Reductio in response, knowing the historical Jesus is important because  the time/culture in which He lived and preached tells us more about who He was/is. A lot of the Bible reflects the time in which it was written and helps us to understand what was going on. I admit that some verses are hard to understand sometimes and if you know what was going on culturally and historically, it sheds some light on the meaning. Especially if you're reading a hard translation.

For the record, I do agree that how one feels about Jesus is most important of all, but, to add to Reductio's statement, just going by feeling is following blindly and, contrary to anything stated otherwise that you will ever hear from any source you ever encounter, God wants us to know as much about Him as our little humble brains can absorb.

I thought it was overdone and silly.  I believe our lives are too short to be wasted.

I sometimes think too masculine with my Christian beliefs: warcrying, guns blazing, muscle pumping sorta thing.   :D  I kid, I kid.

Seriously, that is very much the truth what she said.

To Scott H, I laughed hysterically when I read what you said.  The Passion is that in a way, though it doesn't negate its message though.  I still want to see a Ken Burns version personally of Christ's life.  That would rock to me no matter what his religious beliefs are.
