My secret hope is that they won't be able to get the rights for Twilight, and go down the list until they do a live Riff of Super Mario Bros.

just shy of 52K so far.
An email announcing it might have put this over the goal already. I just happened upon it while checking the forum today.
I got an email. Plus it's all over social media.
I guess it'll be hard to negotiate for the rights when Summit can tell exactly how much they have to spend.

One thing i'm a bit dubious about is the digital copy.  I could see sumit possibly allowing them to live riff the film as a one time thing, but I can't see them giving the OK for a digital copy release.

I'm concerned about that part as well. Even though it's a modified version with no real possibility of marketplace confusion, I can see it causing trouble. Who knows though, maybe they'll raise some crazy amount of money.

OK, I just got the email too. Totally awesome how quickly this got funded.

Edit: And by "all over social media",  I assume that means facebook, something I avoid and am going to have to be mandated to join if I ever do.

Well, they may have already gotten a quote from Summit, or there might be an already established market price for a rebroadcast. Plus, if Summit says "We see that you raised $300k. So, our price is $300k" then Legend can simply say "Hey, folks who made The Wizard. Will you take 65 grand to let us riff it?" and then at some future date come back and offer Summit a more realistic number.

Hm... The Wizard is a Universal film, so I can't imagine it wouldn't be dirt cheap either.

Except that its...you know...the Wizard.  I don't imagine Universal would give it away, but its a movie that they aren't currently profiting on a lot right now, if at all.  Is it even on DVD or Blu Ray right now?  Unless they come up against someone who's a massive idiot and/or jerk in the office its going to be much cheaper to license than Twilight, which is still freshly off being a box-office juggernaut.

Yep, available on DVD.

I guess I'm just curious to

1. see how much money we magnificent bastards can raise.
2. wonder how much a studio can drive up the price.

With how quickly this is getting funded I'm thinking the $55,000 they wanted at the beginning was conservative. This skyrocketed pretty quickly!  I'd love to see Twilight's riff on the big screen but I think one of the other movies would make for a better experience. (Like Catwoman or Batman and Robin esp. if they re-write a Batman and Robin riff all from the guys rather than the fan-riff they already did.)   $55,000 strikes me as low to license a new, popular, movie but what do I know about licensing movies?  And, wait, I pledged my money and I have to wait until August to get my rewards?! Boo! ;)

Pak-Man

Well I guess there's going to be a live Twilight show. Neat! Oooh! New Norman short, too! Yeah, I'm backing this. :^)

Trekker4747

Well, and all respect to Rifftrax, they "oversold" the Kickstarter by saying it was for Twilight. They've not gotten the rights yet and can't be sure they even WILL get them.  Granted, they seemed to think $55,000 (and likely a percentage of ticket sales and DVD sales) was enough to get the rights was enough and they got that in no time at all (thank you, Social Media) but it's not a guarantee. It's all in the hands of Lionsgate if they want to release the rights. (Which they will if they deem it profitable. The series is over so it's not like they need to "save face" or anything.)   But it could likelihood be some other movie, and not, Twilight. So they "oversold" the Kickstarter campaign.  I still contributed because, darn, I want to see any of these movies in a Live! event, but man.  Just wish it wasn't in August. Ugh, that's a long time away.

I would imagine they've done at least some initial inquiries into the rights for a few of the ones in that ten worst list.

When we would show movies in the auditorium in college the costs for the rights varied depending on the movie.  Sometimes it was a flat rate for the film, and for others (usually the 'bigger' movies if I recall) would be a percentage of the total gate.  And I think the licensing was done through somewhere like Swank, Criterion, or MPLC.

And yes, obviously this is different than just playing a movie for people. :)

Darth Geek

So now how much do we have to raise for them to get the rights to riff the Star Wars Holiday Special LIVE?
