Darth Geek

But these were just cliche characters anyway, that the original series had the luxury of several seasons of episodes to develop. Since the new reboot is a movie and only about two hours, of course it isn't going to be as elaborate as that.

Still don't understand the continues secrecy about the villain.  Why bother hiding it at this point, just admit Kirk is battling Charlie K. Mitchell.

Yeah, exactly. They're cliched stereotypes of the characters.  "Kirk is apparently cocky! So let's make him ONLY that!"  Kirk isn't Han Solo. He was a serious guy--downright irritable a lot of the time--who had moments of levity with his friends.  He didn't thumb his nose at authority--at least not directly--and he took his job very seriously. This guy's a fucking fratboy.  Scotty's apparently a buffoon, instead of someone who cares more about his engines than anyone actually should.   Chekov's a joke-machine; he's a child and a geek instead of being a young, serious, earnest officer who happens to let that get him introuble.  Sulu had a fever-induced hallucination where he was D'artagnan once, so now he's a sword-wielding ninja! HIYAHHH!  Uhura...well, she's a girl, so she's now SEXY! And let's have her have sex with someone! I know, Spock! YEAH!

All the stuff with Kirk's daddy issues, all the "longing to be somewhere else while staring into the distance," that's all Star Wars, not Trek.  Family does play into Trek, sure, but usually the theme is that the crew is the family, not "let's deal with all the family baggage issues."

This is a really nice explanation. I do not necessarily agree (except about Uhurua. That is EXACTLY how they effed her up) but I can understand everything Im means.

See, I thought the more pronounced personality differences could mostly be tied to Nero's time-traveling actions. Kirk and Spock had different upbringings, different personalities and, by extention, a different relationship with the crew. Now I'll grant that it's a cheap trick to let them pretty much do anything they want and make it OK, but there it is...

I don't even really see it as cheap.  It's a perfectly grounded explanation given the universe created over the past 40+ years.  We know there are alternate universes where people act differently.

We are aware it's a reboot, it doesnt change the fact that it doesnt seem like a Star Trek movie.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

I'm there. Enjoyed the hell out if the last one, even as a long time Trek fan. Yeah it's not the same Trek, but it's fun.

Why Spock, who considered his human side a weakness would have a relationship with a human is the problem.

Well, his mom was human, so it kind of makes sense.

I'll say this as a life long Star Trek fan who's also used to reboots of things. I like the old Star Trek. I like the new Star Trek. I don't necessarily accept the new as a replacement for the old because I like them both for different reasons, and I think that's where it falls apart for a lot of fans of the old franchise. The new is meant to be enjoyed as itself and on a different level than the old. One doesn't have to be so puritan about it.
