I get all my music on wax cylinders you guys.
I've got a few of them also, but nothing to play them.  Edison also made his own type of disc (I only have one of those), but the player was too complicated so it lost out to the simpler design used on 78s.  His designs didn't wear out the grove as fast but to do that the player had to mechanically track the grove.

Yeah, suck on that, lassieface!

The wax cylinders? They taste awful.

I'd like to see this thread stickied so we can refer to it and comment on the movies we've seen. Is that a thing that could happen?

Last night I managed to see 'Magnificent Seven' (in lieu of 'Seven Samurai').

I can now say that I've seen a Western where I not only enjoyed it, but that I was interested in knowing 'what happens next', AND where I lost track of time while watching it.  :)

Oh, and a reminder to anyone who hasn't seen # 82 - Le Voyage Dans La Lune ["Trip to the Moon"] by Georges Méliès (or to anyone who wants to see it again): it will probably be among the 17 Méliès shorts aired on Turner Classic Movies between Midnight and 2AM on Monday the 16th.

Magnificent 7 is the first movie I remember watching.  And it's pretty much my favorite movie of all time.  You picked a good one.

Glad you liked that one! I actually watched Magnificent Seven before I saw Seven Samurai, and I recall enjoying it quite a bunch. Gonna have to see about watching it again one of these days, come to think of it.

And as for A Trip to the Moon, as an alternate alternate idea, I'm pretty sure the entire thing is on YouTube. What with it being less than 20 minutes long and all.

Yes.  My personal belief is that one of the studio execs was afraid to admit he didn't comprehend what was going on in the film, so he required that there be a 'noir' voice-over on the theatrical release.  For anyone with the ability to comprehend science fiction/action film memes, the voice-over is not only redundant, but generally considered annoying. ;)

Yeah... I was astonished, given how much I've disliked Westerns in the past, that I actually could see myself watching that one again at some point!  THAT is a good film (of any genre).  [side note: The only other Western I ever liked was 'Last of the Wild Horses' on MST3K, and that was only because the riffing in it is so superb.  It's one of the 14 MST3Ks that I consider 5-star riffing.  (For comparison: there have been over 25 RiffTrax with what I consider 5-star riffing at this point, and they are still about 30 films shy of the scripted MST3K ouvre [i.e. 'not counting the KTMA ones'].) ...but I digress [a lot].]  Hopefully there will be a dubbed version of Seven Samurai someday, so I can enjoy it, too.

True, A Trip to the Moon probably is on YouTube, but I believe that the Méliès films on Turner Classic Movies this Monday are recently-restored versions, so likely considerably better quality picture.  [Of course, if someone records them off TCM Monday and uploads an HD copy to YouTube, that comment will become moot. ;) ]
