Seven Samurai.
While we're on the subject of Kurosawa, might I suggest Rashomon? A fantastic film which is about the very nature of storytelling, especially by those with reasons to not be entirely truthful or, at the very least, whose perceptions are not beyond suspicion.

Kurosawa should definitely have a few spots in a top 100 but one of those has to go to Rashomon.

That's another good choice, Tripe. I'd also back you up on Kurosawa in general, but truth be told the two mentioned so far are the only things of his I've seen. If only there were some way for people to let me know which other ones of his I absolutely, positively gotta watch.

The Fourth Man
I guess between your nomination and mine we get "The Fourth Kind"... eh? Eh?! :D
(Clarification, no, I am NOT nominating that movie)

Deep Throat
Yes indeed because a movie where some schmuck slurps coke through a straw out of a woman's va-JJ is SOOOOO classy and most certainly befitting of the best films of all time.

Well that makes it easy for me to suggest some other title then. :)

I love that Monty Python, Airplane and Star Wars are soundly spanking Citizen Kane.  :D

Fourth Man isn't the Verhoeven movie I would have picked, interesting choice though

Oh, sorry, I didn't know we were sticking to "Classy" films.
So is The Room "classy" or is it one of "the best films of all time"?
you are tearing me apot Imrahil!

I like RD's idea of providing a case for a movie being in the best 100 along with the nomination. Probably a lot of you haven't seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but it's a fantastic film. It's about being who you are and finding people who accept you, and about letting go of the bitterness when people about whom you care won't accept you. It's about finding your place in the grand scheme of things and about realizing that you can be better than your circumstances, both good and bad. I first watched this movie at a particularly vulnerable time in my life and it, along with Secretary, spoke volumes to me. And goddammit, I defy anyone to watch "Wig In a Box" and not feel uplifted.

I agree it's a great movie but there were just 3 movies I liked more in the list, the problem with voting for "movies you should see" is a lot of people might not have seen them :)

I agree. Plus in a crowd like this, nerd movies are going to win out every time.

This list is NOT "the best films of all time", it is "Movies You Have to See".  And, per the rules in post #1 for this thread:

These don't have to be the best movies (although sometimes they are).  They can be movies that made an impact society, they can be movies that changed your life, they can be movies that you still quote every day, or they can just be movies that you really liked to watch.

Deep Throat had a massive impact on society when it came out.  It was shown in regular movie theaters, and it was the first adult film that got serious attention from average and 'high brow' people.  These were people who had no qualms about going to see this film at a regular movie theater (you know: ones that had floors that were sticky for very different reasons than the theaters that adult films had previously been relegated to).

Because of Deep Throat, people's discussions of sex and sexuality became more open than they had before.  These discussions helped break the hold that the puritanical view of sex still held on the majority of Americans, even though this film came after the 60s, so generally after 'free love' was a common phrase.  It is quite likely that the societal 'blowback' (so to speak  ;)) from this film helped reform laws in many states that had previously had oral sex as a crime.

I saw it when it was still in 'first run' showings.  That was when I was 15 years old, on an 'Ameripass' bus tour of the country [the pass was for a particular time period, and you could go anywhere you wanted to during that time], and I was touring the country with just my 17 year old brother.

I think I'll also keep a list somewhere of every movie that's been nominated.  I'm sure the first little bit will be full of movies that most everyone has seen.  I think that will change eventually.

I should probably redact "Deep Throat," as I don't care at all about this list, and I can guarantee you that it won't influence me in picking future movies to watch even one jot.  I did it to kind of be funny, and to kind of poke some holes in something, neither of which are terribly good reasons.

This isn't to say that Lucas's point isn't valid, but it's not really why I suggested it.

So I'll quietly leave now.

I reject your redaction.
