After much thought, I have to nominate Juno. I was going to say Ponyo because of the way it perfectly captures the wonderful perspective and joy of a child and reminds the viewer that life is beautiful, but I had to admit that Juno had a bigger effect on me, though I've only seen it once. When it was over, my outlook was different than when it started. I felt more empathy for human beings and I guess it put things in perspective. Seeing it was one of many key events in that time of my life that changed me from an angry cynic into the person I am today.

Do you mean the live action 2007 film 'Juno' or an anime' film [that Netflix doesn't have]?  [I have seen Ponyo, and agree with the sentiments... a very life-affirming film.]  Whichever it is, I will make an effort to see it.

I wanted to give a 'heart' to this post for it's content, rather than 'pre-voting' for the film (which, regardless whether it was the live action film or another by that name, I haven't seen it), but knew that a 'simple' heart would result in confusion.  So here's one for 'post content, not film'. :)  <3

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I had never heard of this before you first mentioned it.  When I looked it up on Netflix I initially thought, "not my thing," (not that I had anything against it, but just not something I'd go out of my way to see).

But with your next post about it:

I like RD's idea of providing a case for a movie being in the best 100 along with the nomination. Probably a lot of you haven't seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but it's a fantastic film. It's about being who you are and finding people who accept you, and about letting go of the bitterness when people about whom you care won't accept you. It's about finding your place in the grand scheme of things and about realizing that you can be better than your circumstances, both good and bad. I first watched this movie at a particularly vulnerable time in my life and it, along with Secretary, spoke volumes to me.
I added it to my Netflix queue.

The best friend of my brother's while we were growing up told us about three years ago that he is a pre-op transgender (waiting basically for the money to finish, but living as a female now).  I talked with my brother about it to help him process his initial reaction more [my main comment was "spirit finds itself in a multitude of forms, sometimes it decides to CHANGE form.  Sometimes that's by dying and moving to a different plane.   ['Your friend'] just happens to want to change to a female, but having the earlier experiences of being a male during the same specific period of consciousness."]  Since that time, I've connected to this mutual friend via e-mail.

After reading your description of the film, I wanted to see it for myself, but also so that I might be able to personally recommend it to this friend (if she hasn't already seen it).  So thank you for the larger explanation.

So I agree with your agreement with RD's idea ;D of providing a case for a particular film.  Even though I wouldn't have seen this by the time voting was over for it, it made a difference in my interest in seeing it.

I reject your redaction.
I think with all due respect that should be the decision of a Pterodactyl.

Would that be a polydactyl pterodactyl you'd think should be in charge of rejecting the redaction?

I think I'll ... keep a list somewhere of every movie that's been nominated.  I'm sure the first little bit will be full of movies that most everyone has seen.  I think that will change eventually.

I'm going to shorten the poll to 1 day.  It's pretty clear what the result will be, and we almost have our next list ready.

Both of these sound good.  If you keep track of what the number of votes is for the 'average successful nomination', then after reaching a certain point, you could put up the ones 'just missing' being on the final list to be voted on.  That way, those that just missed being on the final list (probably simply from what they were competing against, as many of these earliest suggestions are likely the most popular in general) could have another chance.

Honestly, until you mentioned shortening the poll to one day, if there are only three winners per voting, it hadn't occurred to me that it would have taken 1/4 of a year to complete to 100 films... the attrition rate of voters with it taking that long (with three days for voting) would've been much higher than it likely will be with votes being daily.  [And, for my sake, with a daily vote I'll feel less tempted to write lengthy posts regarding so many nominations.  ::)]

No! Nothing can be allowed to temper your lengthy posts. I need them for sustenance during my daily romps through the net (it's a scary, coherent-text-barren place out there).

I was referring to the live action 2007 film. :)

So does Holy Grail, it's barely beating Matrix as well :-P

As was pointed out previously, folks are more likely to go for favorites and genre choices right now. Luckily, for the purposes of this list said choices are just as valid as Kane, and there will be room down the road for everyone's favorite newspaperman as well.

I wasn't complaining I was just shocked.  This forum has always seemed to have a good number of classic film fans so i was just a little surprised.
