103 Movies You Have To See or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Poll

After much thought, I have to nominate Juno. I was going to say Ponyo because of the way it perfectly captures the wonderful perspective and joy of a child and reminds the viewer that life is beautiful, but I had to admit that Juno had a bigger effect on me, though I've only seen it once. When it was over, my outlook was different than when it started. I felt more empathy for human beings and I guess it put things in perspective. Seeing it was one of many key events in that time of my life that changed me from an angry cynic into the person I am today.

I should probably redact "Deep Throat," as I don't care at all about this list, and I can guarantee you that it won't influence me in picking future movies to watch even one jot.  I did it to kind of be funny, and to kind of poke some holes in something, neither of which are terribly good reasons.

This isn't to say that Lucas's point isn't valid, but it's not really why I suggested it.

So I'll quietly leave now.

I reject your redaction.

Yeah, I'd really like to emphasize how much it helps to put a little blurb in for why you've nominated a specific film. LucasM just validated a "joke" entry and Wurwolf just got my to add something else to my Netflix.

And yeah, as Wurwolf said, some movies are a given for this board. But eventually we're going to run dry of those and need to take a serious look at some of the more alternative looks.

The end result is hopefully going to be a mass list I can start sharing with my more movie-deprived friends (and I have many, and while I like to customize a to-watch list for each one, I'm a busy guy these days. Having a quick shorthand would be a great help).

I'm going to shorten the poll to 1 day.  It's pretty clear what the result will be, and we almost have our next list ready.

If Im really wants to take Deep Throat back I'll submit it in his place. It really is a tremendously important film. Lucas already covered that though.

I think with all due respect that should be the decision of a Pterodactyl.

That makes 10.  I'll start the new poll tomorrow morning.

That's another good choice, Tripe. I'd also back you up on Kurosawa in general, but truth be told the two mentioned so far are the only things of his I've seen. If only there were some way for people to let me know which other ones of his I absolutely, positively gotta watch.

Yojimbo and Stray Dog.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Yojimbo
Sort of surprising to hear somebody say they've seen Seven Samurai but that they've not seen that really. :)

Incidentally, what was the Japanese title of that film with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner that I Will Always Love You was the big hit from?

Kete

I would say most people's introduction would be Seven Samurai then Yojimbo.

When it comes to the older classics, I tend to cherrypick a lot. And then I start adding on more stuff, and then my Netflix queue becomes unfathomably clogged.

Also, yeah, I'd heard of Seven Samurai long before I hear of Yojimbo.

Tripe

Yes but people who've seen the first have generally seen the second, most libraries tend to have those two even if they don't have any of his other films. :)

I wasn't saying people progress from Yojimbo to 7S.

Relaxing Dragon

Where this back in the days of library rentals you would be correct, but it's all Netflix and the like for me these days.

Which actually is a bit of a shame in situations like this, since Netflix tends to give me so much immediate variety that I miss stuff like what you're talking about. Go figure, but this is making me a bit nostalgic.

Tripe

No, I was just talking about the ubiquity of those two, the library thing was an illustration of that. :)
