Goddamn does that Bachelorette movie look stupid. Yikes!

No dumber than Bridesmaids. Plus, at least it has Lizzy Caplan. And that other guy, from that show. With the things.  You know!
Oh him. Yeah, I like him. He had those things.

Is the whole thing shot in nausea-cam?

The Paranormal Activity movies? Most definitely. I'd say they're about 90% jittery hand-held cam.

I think that's overstating it. The main draw of the series isn't the choppy, moving handheld bits, but those long, static shots with no camera movement whatsoever. Depending on the viewer, that's either the main source of the horror (yo!), or the parts that are boring as get all.

I enjoy the movies too. First two scared me like nothing else (I'll take the mocking there, but it's true), and the third one was still pretty enjoyable. At the very least, these movies make for some fantastic midnight shows, since you usually get a good rowdy and reactive audience that makes for a very fun evening. Seriously, it's one of the only times I enjoy hearing constant talking in a theater, since it's all full of "don't go in there!" pleaded which is oddly satisfying to hear. Especially from masses of easily spooked teens.

I agree. The static shots are definitely the best part. That doesn't change the fact that the majority of the movies are shot with hand-held. 90% is probably an exaggeration, but if you have an aversion to shaky-cam, these movies are gonna drive you fucking nuts.

Oh yes, most definitely, but my point was that 90% is just overstating how much of the movie's running time is the choppy stuff. I'd say the first one is more a 60/40 split between choppy/still. Not great, but it's not pulling a Cloverfield here.

Box Office Milestone: 'Ted' Jumps $200 Mil Mark in North America

QuoteThe pic is already one of the most successful R-rated comedies of all time, with numerous international markets yet to open. Director Seth MacFarlane's raunchy comedy Ted jumped the $200 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend in addition to scoring stellar numbers in key foreign markets.

From Universal and Media Rights Capital, Ted has now earned $203.4 million in North America and will soon eclipse Wedding Crashers ($209.3 million) to become the No. 4 R-rated comedy of all time behind The Hangover ($277.3 million), The Hangover Part II ($254.8 million) and Beverly Hills Cop ($234.5 million).

Ted -- starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, along with the MacFarlance-voiced teddy bear -- is rolling out slowly overseas. After enjoying big business, the comedy opened in another of other markets over the weekend for an early international total of $77.3 million. The pic's worldwide gross of $280.7 million lands it on the top ten list of R-rated comedies globally.

The pic's international weekend gross was $32 million from 20 markets, including first-place finishes in the U.K., Germany, Russia, Austria Switzerland and Ukraine. Ted grossed $15.3 million from 508 screens in the U.K., the third-best showing ever for a Universal film behind the Bridge Jones sequel and King Kong. Germany turned in $7.4 million, the best debut of the year for a Universal title.

The film will roll out in an additional 38 territories over the next few months.

This goddamn thing is making boatloads of money, and would seem to have a decent shot at the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. I'm not interested enough to go see it at the theater, but I'll be dropping it into the Netflix queue. I've got a real love/hate thing going with MacFarlane. He's really become a creatively wretched parody of himself over the years. I don't really have anything to base it on, but I'm hoping this is somewhat of a return to better, funnier material.

I think I mentioned this a few pages back, but when MacFarlane actually applies himself to something, he proves himself to be an immensely talented, funny individual. The tired and lame feelings only pop up when he lets all his stuff fall onto cruise control, or he spreads himself way too thin. The movie, despite having a few flashes of those more annoying tics of his (including one cutaway gag that's exactly what everyone hates about Family Guy), is also quite funny and well played. I'm not going to call it the funniest comedy of the year (I think 21 Jump Street might get that award from me), but it's still very worthwhile. And honestly, good for it for succeeding. Not often an R-rated original property does this well, and that's cause for celebration in and of itself.

My stumbling block with this one is Marky Mark. I fucking hate that guy.

Fair enough, but what about the Funky Bunch?

'Zero Dark Thirty' Trailer Teases Bigelow's Bin Laden Takedown Film

QuoteThe last time Kathryn Bigelow traveled to the Middle East, it was a quiet trip that resulted in Oscar glory. Her next trip there has been considerably higher profile, and we're still months away from the resultant film's premiere.

Debuting on Monday is the first trailer for Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, the hotly-anticipated film portrayal of the secret CIA missions that ultimately took down 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden.

Bigelow is reunited here with screenwriter Mark Boal, who won an Oscar for his Hurt Locker screenplay; unlike that film, this movie has become a national flashpoint not for its portrayal of war and how soldiers cope (that part remains to be seen) but for how it's getting made in the first place. The wheels on Zero Dark Thirty were already in motion when bin Laden was killed in May, 2011, which led to a major about-face for the director-writer team.

They received cooperation and information on the Seal Team Six mission into Pakistan from the Obama administration, something which has rankled Republicans, who have accused the White House of leaking confidential information to the pair. In order to avoid accusations of political agenda, the film is being released after the November election, on December 19; there is also no depiction of President Obama.

The political context of this is interesting. I assume the accusations of political agenda would be of the "this is pro-Obama propaganda designed to help win him the election" variety.

The only agenda it needs is to be pro-shooting Bin Laden in the face.

Funny you mention that. Word has it special ops decided at the last minute that Operation Shoot Obama in the Face was a little too 'on the nose,' hence them going with Operation Neptune Spear.
