I'm surprised at how many claim he is really overrated as a writer/director. I personally think that's patently ridiculous. in addition to his Batman films, Nolan's made Memento and Insomnia, two amazing crime dramas that are easily up there with the likes of North by Northwest. Then of course there's Inception which is another story entirely. Did people back in the day think that Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock were hacks also?

I have loved Nolan since I saw Memento, but his fate was sealed when I saw The Prestige. It takes a very talented man to tell a story in non-linear format. In the case of Prestige, the story was told in multiple timelines by multiple narrators. Brilliant I say!

I think Dark Knight is a tad overrated in the big picture.. as I think it's a somewhat weak script... But even that said, I've enjoyed every movie of his that I've seen. I think the internet allows for a certain backlash to get more attention nowadays that didn't exist back in the day.... but I don't think the guy gets killed by any means. I can't think of any movie he has made that hasn't seen a decidedly positive reception.

See, I don't get that. The Dark Knight has everything you could want in a film: danger, suspense, great twists, great characters and development of said characters, excellent villains and an emotional connection with the audience. The themes are wonderfully integrated and the humanity displayed is a wonderful juxtaposition of what we expect from the dark nature of Gotham and its people. Weak script or not... it's a great story mostly because it's about far more than just Batman, however all the underlying themes relate to him.

Except Batman is a bit player in the whole thing... he is completely ineffectual... like Phantom of Krankor levels of ineffectiveness. Joker is omnipresent and kicks complete ass whenever he wishes... until... Morgan Freeman saves the day at the end. Maybe not a bad Batman script, assuming you dig Batman getting his ass handed to him for 100 minutes until he gets bailed out by a 70 year old dude and his lame "big brother is watching you" allegory device.

Everyone's got their own opinion but there's a lot of people who want to be the first (or only) to hate something/someone because it makes them feel special  ::)

Agreed. I wouldn't necessarily discount all criticism of the man's movies, but I would take it all with a grain of salt.

Stop trying to be level headed. You are either a fanboy or a hater! The internet has decided!

Uhhh, WHAT?! Batman does a hell of a lot more ass-kicking in the film then getting his ass kicked. The Russian Mobsters and Scarecrow, the scene in the Dining Hall and having to rescue Rachel, extracting Lau from the high-rise,  how about when he dropped Maroni from a 2 story building, stopping the cops from accidentally killing the hostages? That's Batman KICKING ASS. Think the only real time he got his ass kicked was when he crashed the Batpod, and that was arguably intentional.

Yes, and this has nothing to do with the main villain. Nothing at all. Like it or not, Morgan Freeman saves the day. Joker did whatever he liked. It was a crappy script for Batman.

I think that was kind of the point, was that Batman, as effective as a crime fighter as he is, he's powerless against a foe who has no limits and no taboos on what he does. But besides all that, let's see you find the damn Joker.  :P Oh and you better be careful because there are rabid dogs, guys with machine guns, and of course, the Joker himself, but I'm sure you can take them all, no problem.
