Just as long as they don't get Alec Baldwin or Billy Zane, Remember when they treid to be an 'old-fashioned action hero'?

...

...

...What?! I'm just sayin'

I remember Billy Zane as the Phantom, but who did Alec Baldwin play?
Why none other than Lamont Cranston,  A.K.A. The Shadow

Hey, it was better than Warren Beatty as Dick Tracy.  :gouge:

Hard to believe this wasn't a huge hit...  ::)
Actually, I'm pretty sure it WAS a huge hit. It made over $100 million in profit, and $110 more than The Rocketeer, which I'm sure nerds would vehemently insist was "a huge hit."

Somewhere between "The Last Starfighter should be owned on DVD" and "Dick Tracy sucked" lies truth. You can't pretend some bad movies you liked as a kid were great while others were not even liked by you at all.

Doctor Who?

I have never seen it but I remember the Dick Tracy movie being a big deal when i was a kid.  All my friends saw it,had tons of toys based on it,and own the VHS tape.  I can't say if it was any good but it was a big deal.

It's not a bad movie, but "Warren Beaty and Madonna" aren't exactly arguments for it being a classic.

Neither is Al Pacino past The Godfather II
I like artificial grape flavor, but I hate real grapes.  A paradox!?

Is it just be or did they tone down the brightness of the yellow for the movie?

That's more like it it!

You see the movie failed because it was not true to the comic,if it had been it would have been a hit.

I think it was a little too true to the comic strip:

Maybe it needed more of Madonna's nipples?

While I kinda enjoyed Dick Tracy myself, for some reason.  But as for The Shadow,  I just couldn't get past the fact that it was Alec Baldwin portraying the Hero, spouting all that Pro-American dialog.

The Same with Bill Zane as The Phantom, I just didn't buy into the character that he was presenting, Both performances felt kinda flat.

My favorite scene from Phantom?  When Billy tells Devil (the dog) to go get Hero and then Devil finds Hero, barks at him and the horse takes off with him to go rescue the Phantom.  Man, say what you will that dog is one talented linguist...

Warren Beatty's and Madonna's was flat too, but for some reason I enjoyed it in spite of my self, Still, NOT A CLASSIC, even if it is a little older now.

Just goes to show that the first movie in a franchise is usually about as good as it's going to get, that and Videogame, and comic book movies suck.  The only exceptions, IMHO, is the first Batman('89) and the first Spiderman and X-Men, and Hellboy (though to be fair, I haven''t seen Helboy 2 yet.)  All else lies madness...

Doctor Who?

So Hellboy 2,Spiderman 2,Xmen2,Batman begins,The Dark Knight,Superman the movie,Superman2,Iron Man,and Watchmen are all worse then what you listed ???

Thom_Serveaux

I didn't say it was a hard and fast rue, more of a general rule of thumb.  But let's not forget Street Fighter, Superman 3 & 4, Underdog, Super Mario Bros. Double Dragon,  Fantastic Four 1 & 2, X- Men 3,  The Shaow, The Phantom, and of course, Batman Forever,  and Batman and Robin, just to name a few....

I have to disagree, I usually find the first sequel better because they don't have the contraints of covering the hero's origins.

True. If it is a good director, then the freedom of story, the additional budget and less producer meddling does tend to lead to better results. See the list Doc Who stated. However if the director is bad, or replaced with a less controlling and more cowtowed to producer demands, then the result is far, far worse.
