I don't mean to be too much of an ass, but the only resemblances to palpatine are the pale skin and the long hair. Knowing that they both share those things in common doesn't make me laugh out loud.. if there was an old lady with long black hair and ugly wrinkly skin and someone did that quote then I'd laugh, because there is much, much more going on. When it physically looks like he caught a bumblebee, I see how it can look like that, but I don't laugh hard. What if someone formed a fist in a pic and you said "I caught a baseball" and everybody on an internet forum thought that was funny. Do you see what kind of bizarro world this is? Those sorts of jokes just point out trivial physical resemblances, but they don't point out anything goofy about the image. why?

It's his facial expression really, it looks like he could be saying it (at least that's why I posted it in the first place)

Oh come on appman, in a way I agree with you but the truth is the instant I read it, I chuckled.  And that's really what matters.  It doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever.  It could have been a caption that said:

"POOGADAGA POOGADAGA GIGGLE FARTS!!!"

If I chuckle with out even thinking about it then its funny.  Its as simple as that.  Even though that quote is just random nonsense that doesn't even begin to make any sense.

Humor isn't logical.  If there was any logic to it then you'd think someone would have invented the ultimate formula for humor by now that works for everyone.

Now shut up because talking about this makes you look like you're all butt hurt because the one you wanted to win didn't win (Even though I'm sure thats not true).

I think the biggest issue that seems to be confusing to appman is that this was what the guys who work at RiffTrax thought was funny.  It wasn't a poll on what 'most' people thought - or would think - was funniest; just them, at that point in time.

So regardless what my thoughts are [actually if anyone's interested my thoughts are, "a lot of other people's picture riffs were funnier than mine,"  :) ] the contest was what they thought was funniest, and they thought the three final ones were funniest.  QED

If you want to get really picky, the Emperor was sitting down as he said that line...Sheen is standing in that picture.

Frankly, it was funny but I didn't think it was a winner really.  But it's nowhere close to the disaster that you're trying to make it out to be.

i think that was made pretty clear

Looking back I was being a dick.  I'm sorry.  I didn't like your jokes but I don't like being so blunt like that.  I'm impressed you didn't go off defending yourself or attacking me or something crazy.

I didn't think it was a disaster. I could understand why people like it, I was saying that I want more depth in a joke. I'm emotionally withdrawn enough that I prefer more to be going on to burst a laugh out of me. And I think topics should change because this is too histrionic.

I think it is worth noting though, that the images in and of themselves had no context. I think it's awkward to make a captain when we don't know anything about why the characters are there and what they're doing. I think riffs are funny because we're laughing more at what's going on and how ridiculous the situation of the plot and characters are at the time.

This one is well deserved, I think we all agree.

Yeah. As soon as I read that one, all my subsequent entries were accompanied by a prodigious flop sweat.

I didn't find it funny.  For me, not even a smile.  So I'm 'correcting' THE QUEEN!'s assessment (because, obviously, we don't all agree on that  ;) ).  There were a few submissions that I doubted I could top (and I was right  ;) ), but none of the ones I appreciated most ended up as winners.  Different tastes in humor lead to a wide variety of what is labeled 'comedy', and why some people can enjoy things like Seinfeld and Rob Schneider, both of which I find - at best - mildly irritating.  BFD.

[Edit: since sometimes I can be misinterpreted, the next paragraph is more an 'evaluation of humor' in general, rather than specifically related to captions submitted for this game.]
I agree with appman: I prefer more depth to things that make me laugh: the unexpected and the obscure - but still relevant - references strike me as funniest.  Things that actually stretch my thinking while being unexpected and obscure at the same time are by far the funniest.  In other words, a comment which is stretching the relationship between all the different aspects of the components of 'the funny'... for instance: puns or wordplay for the sake of puns or wordplay aren't remotely as funny as if there is a double meaning or multiple layers of meaning buried inside of the pun or wordplay [I used "double meaning" instead of "double entendre" there, because 'entendre' is most commonly interpreted as having a sexual secondary meaning].

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think anyone here is really bothered by the result (some might be confused by it, maybe, but I don't think they were 'bothered').  The fact is: this was a game, for fun.  So it really doesn't matter who won the prizes, I had fun trying to make up funny lines, and really enjoyed reading the ones that were submitted, seeing the range of ideas.  So with all the 'new funny' we got to share, weren't we really ALL winners here?   ;)

I just wanted to say great job by all participants. Lots of good stuff out there (despite some opinions). I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's jokes and hope this game continues in the future.

Not bothered unless all of the subsequent "Nobody can ever beat that one" posts after that either influenced the judges or discouraged anyone else from posting something that may have been funnier.....

But we'll never know 100% (as nothing can be).
