I think you are forgetting some from this year, though.

Bruno, The Hangover, Moon, Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2, Drag Me to Hell, Crank High Voltage, Fanboys, Coraline, and Taken. Out of those, the only ones to not get mostly-positive reviews (or box office results) was Transformers and Terminator. I've seen all of them excet for Fanboys and Coraline.

However I agree, last year was probably better in terms of having many, many high quality flicks. Not to say there are NONE this year, but I think we're not quite on par with last year in terms of numbers.
You have GOT to see Coraline. Great, great film. One of my top ten favorites so far this year.

My comment was mostly about Summer Blockbusters, as last year we had so many of the major ones that were genuinely GOOD movies, as apposed to this year where dumb but fun tends to be a compliment.

Can't argue with that. And I'm the type who only really went for Iron Man and Dark Knight last year in the blockbuster season (the others I just didn't care enough about). Those two aces go a long way 8)
Even ones that might have been dumb but fun, like Incredible Hulk, were really good movies. Honestly, the only one I felt really crapped the bed was Indy IV.

Now this year, District 9 and 9 might be the lone summer bright spots (I don't count Harry Potter as it wasn't originally gong to be a summer movie, and UP is Pixar which is always guaranteed quality).

Pixar is not always quality guarenteed, it is watchability guarenteed.

What, no love for Monsters vs. Aliens? :(

I'm cautious. I don't take the R rating as a positive assurance that it will be "serious" (whatever that means.) In this day and age, R is just as likely to mean a badly done sex scene as serious gore (which again, why is this something really good?) or serious treatment of subject matter.

People I know are excited about it. I suppose I'll see it if somebody else wants to, and if I can find a good review that actually voices an opinion about the movie instead of giving me a star rating, seven paragraphs of plot summary, and a forced pun.
Love doesn't hurt. It kills.

When was R not likely meant sex or violence?

Doctor Who?

Also it at least means the movie is not aimed at retarded 12 year olds like most of this year's movies so far.   Also the trailer and the buzz coming out of comic con makes it sound like it has a brain and is well made too.

It's good because it means the director (and the rest of the people involved) are not afraid to show things realistically. To me, it's more distracting to "imply" horror - especially in this case when it's akin to the horrors of war, as weapons are involved - than to just show it, already. Only a few movies have really done it to good effect (Jurassic Park among them) but I'm thinking that, for a serious scifi/horror movie, it's usually the best ones that had a fair share of gore AND a brain. I'll take Alien over Alien vs. Predator any day.

I'm obviously not saying that one causes the other, or that there is ever a direct link between these things, but I'm seriously tired of movies that are afraid to show us what weapons are truly capable of. The last movie that was truly effective at showing damage in that way was Rambo. I think the movie would have been good even without it, but Stallone has been quoted as saying he made it that way because the situation over there really called for that level of violence to be shown - and in those cases, I agree.

I've heard that Riff Raff Theater plans to release a track for AVP any decade now.

Doctor Who?

I just saw the comic con footage and now I am really excited about this movie.  Am I the only one who was annoyed that half the questions were about the canceled Halo movie, can people please get over Halo already?!

I am also excited about The Hobit.

DocWho, I don't know what the world's comin' too, but you and I are both equally excited for a movie?

I'll be seeing it, Friday.

Doctor Who?

Me too. I am going to the first showing at the movie theater in dover and I am taking a friend.  No one can say I am not doing my part to make this thing a hit. I hope it becomes a big hit because then maybe movie studios will see that there is still a market for smaller budget sci-fi that has more idea then a Star Wars or Star trek movie.  I don't have anything against Star Wars or Star Trek it's just that for a few years now it has felt like they are the end all be all of Sci-fi and I would like to see some more verity.

Nergol

Well, I've got my tickets for tonight at midnight.

Then I'll be seeing Ponyo on Saturday.

I'll have reviews up on the blog as soon as I can, and I'll post links here.

Ditto the midnight tickets, I'm all set and ready. Can't wait ;D
