Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

Frozen River (2008): Courtney Hunt

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008): Mike Leigh

In Bruges (2008): Martin McDonagh

Milk (2008): Dustin Lance Black

WALL·E (2008): Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Jim Reardon

In Bruges!   Yay!

Very surprised to see Sally Hawkins and Bruce Springsteen shut out.  Thought they were both shoo-in's for nominations.

Seems the cards are once again stacked in favor of Heath for Best Supporting. Seriously, no James Franco for Milk (Josh Brolin was good, but I doubt he'll win)? And still no Ralph Finnes for In Bruges? Madness.

Apart from that, should be pretty interesting. My shortlist of predictions:

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (looking for a Globes repeat. Second guess is Milk)
Best Actor: Sean Penn in Milk (has a good chance of going to Roarke, but I'm swinging for Penn)
Best Actress: Meryl Streep
Best Director: Danny Boyle
Best Screenplay: In Bruges (I wish...)
Best Makeup: Hellboy II (if this one doesn't win this there's something seriously wrong going on)
Best Editing: The Dark Knight (it definitely deserves this one, no question)
Best Foreign Film: Waltz with Bashir (again, all Sweden's fault here)
Best Original Score: WALL-E
Best Sound Editing: WALL-E

Milk has a chance of winning more than I predicted here; it depends how guilty all the voters are still feeling about Prop 8. I would also like to say I'm pleased at all the nominations for Best Original Song (yes, all three of them), and will be quite happy no matter who wins them (I will admit, though, that Slumdog has the best chance).

The only nominated movies I've seen are The Visitor, Tropic Thunder, In Bruges, WALL-E and TDK.  I have some catching up to do.

I still need to really see Frost/Nixon, The Reader, and Curious Case (and Gran Torino to see if I should be outraged right now). I think it's AMC that does that Best Picture marathon, so I'll probably get a lot down with that.

On performance alone, I'd give it to Rourke over Penn, but it's a close call.  That said, it's Academy voters and Rourke's pissed off A LOT of people in the industry, so I'm not so sure they wouldn't deny him the award for being such a dick.  It sounds dumb and childish, but hey, that's Hollywood.

Ah, but they also *love* comeback stories.  And Sean Penn won a couple of years ago for Mystic River.

Yeah, AMC is doing it again this year according to their website.  $25 for all 5 films (if you have an AMC MovieWatcher card, otherwise it's $30) plus a free large popcorn with all day free refills.  I haven't seen any of the five films, so I plan on attending this year.  It will be a long day, but should be fun.

The Reader over Wall-E?!?!?!   Another year they're going to debate that the best film wasn't even nominated.

Is it wrong to say I hope that there's a split in the voting between Penn, Rourke and possibly Pitt....and Frank Langella wins?

QuoteRobert Downey Jr., "Tropic Thunder"

"And now accepting the Award for 'Best Impression of Russell Crowe...'..."

Do you get the feeling that if anyone else should - by some odd stretch of the imagination - get the award on votes (especially Downey) that they'll say that they're giving it up to Ledger?

I hope he wins and they put starring Academy Award Winner Frank Langella on the Masters of the Universe DVDs.
