Me too.  I think his performance was just as great as Ledger's.  But only one of them really has the ability to win one later, soooooo...   :-\  Oh well, it's already pretty much a lock that he'll be nominated next year for The Soloist.

Not true. They should, in fact, be giving Ledger an Oscar for the Gilliam movie. That's his final performance, and I'm sure it won't stink. I mean, Chris Nolan doesn't really deserve credit for helping somebody get an Oscar. Gilliam needs some limelight for once in his career. Nolan's got plenty of time to make a good movie. Gilliam... might not have the hair left.

What the hell is the Reader?

And what the hell is so great about In Bruges? It wasn't clever or funny or stunningly dramatic or thoughtful or original. It had a midget in it. Change the nomination to Grosse Pointe Blank instead. Let's have some fucking justice. If you're going to nominate a screenplay for a hitman movie, there are half a dozen that are just as good. Well, I mean, that would be fucking crazy. Awarding a good movie that wasn't made in the past year. Pfft. Old things are gay.

Best Actor: Sean Penn in Milk (has a good chance of going to Roarke, but I'm swinging for Penn)

On performance alone, I'd give it to Rourke over Penn, but it's a close call.  That said, it's Academy voters and Rourke's pissed off A LOT of people in the industry, so I'm not so sure they wouldn't deny him the award for being such a dick.  It sounds dumb and childish, but hey, that's Hollywood.

Penn was fantastic in Milk.  Rourke was fantastic in The Wrestler.  Both performances were stronger than the films IMO.

I'd love to see RDJr win for Tropic. That would be hilarious..
He should have won for Chaplin....

Maybe he pissed off too many people when he was using.

And it would be cool to see a comedy performance get an Oscar.  That happens so rarely....if ever?

The Lady Rommel

The only comedy performance I can remember is Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny.   I think Renee Zellwegger (or however its spelled) was nominated but didn't win.  I love RDJ and would love to see him win, he certainly deserves to.

That Slumdog Millionaire looks good.  The only other Indian movie I've seen is Bride and Prejudice, a remake of Pride and Prejudice.  It was really good.  And Sayid from Lost was in it.  Love Sayid.
I don't see race.  People tell me I'm white and I believe them because I watch Antiques Roadshow.

I'd not be surprised if Richard Jenkins got it for The Visitor, that's a great little film.

iv3rdawG

I'd be really surprised. He was great in it but there were so many better performances this year. It's probably the best male acting year I can remember.

I get it now. I understand how The Reader got nominated.

Have a look at the producer listings. Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack. Both of them were Academy darlings. And both of them died this year.

Plus it's a Weinstein movie.

It makes perfect fucking sense why The Reader got nominated over The Dark Knight or Wall-E. The Reader was backed by the kind of calibre the Academy usually give congratulatory backslaps to (i.e. their own).

And it was a "message" movie, wasn't it?

OK so LA is talking about another movie there but that's why The Visitor might get a nod.

I didn't consider it a movie with an in your face MESSAGE.  There are some socio-political issues driving the plot, but I didn't feel like this movie had any kind of agenda.

No neither do I, but giving it a nod might very well be seen as sending some sort of message.

I thought it was a great film.

Gilliam, you say?  Hmmm.  Won't stink, you say?  Lemme think:  "Brazil, "Time Bandits"... yes, yes.  I agre-- wait a second.  How has he been doing lately?  Lemme think:  "Brothers Grimm," "Tideland."  Okay.  Nevermind.  He hasn't done a good movie in over a decade.  And that goes for you too, Tim Burton! (okay... "Big Fish" was... decent).

QuoteWhat the hell is the Reader?
It's a movie hijacked by the same guy who stole the Oscar from "Saving Private Ryan" for "Shakespeare In Nobody-Loves-Or-Even-Talks-About-This-Movie-Anymore."  Greg McDuck has it right.

I'll agree with you on a lot of points, but I have to admit, from a story-structure Mamet-esque view of things, I'd have to say the script was remarkably tight and strong.  If story is all about structure, "In Bruges" has it in spades.  As far as writing a screenplay, a lot can be learned from "In Bruges."

bratpop

Actually I meant Heath's PERFORMANCE in the movie probably won't stink enough to deny him an Oscar. Not to mention, he is probably considered the lead actor in that, and who the hell would rather have a posthumous SUPPORTING Oscar?

So now... fucking what's so fucking great about fucking Mamet bullshit asshole balls?

QuoteAs far as writing a screenplay, a lot can be learned from "In Bruges."
Erm... so screenplays should be mediocre with lots of R-rated material and hilarious midgets? Screenplays should be vehicles for Colin Farrell? Screenplays should be forgettable, but overrated? Screenplays should always have some kind of bell tower, watchtower or clock tower, from which people fall? What... I'm grasping at straws here.

That's a nice bit of parody there, well done.
