Come on it wasn't that good

I'm not even sure that Lewis' character in There Will Be Blood is evil.  He's certainly corrupt and probably insane, but I felt that his need for a familial connection made him human enough for sympathy.

Also is he evil (assuming he is) becasue he works in Oil or does he work in oil and happen to be evil.

My father worked in Oil and, as far as I can tell he wasn't evil. He did however work with a couple of aresholes, so you know it takes all sorts.

I didn't find him evil, I saw him as a driven man who hid beneath an asshole-like exterior. He showed various weaknesses throughout the film that made him human and sympathetic for me.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

People praised Superman Returns out the keister, and honestly I kinda liked it at first but really, it isn't remotely as good as most everyone says. It was no more than a remake, and a disappointing remake at that.

Well yes but what I'm saying is despite his characteristics, I don't think that they are really a comment on the oil business so much as just an individual who works in that business.

Doctor Who?

Well then maybe i will give it a shot.

The vibe I got from reviews i read(these were reviews praising the movie by the way)was that it made it look like everyone who made a living from oil was just plain evil and I know that isn't true so I didn't feel like watching it.

I may give it a try once my new debit card comes in so i can restart my netflix account.

How long do they have to keep me waiting for this thing?!

ScottotD

I'm very intrigued by your take.  Have you made decisions like that about other movies?

Are you talking about my take on NCFOM or my take on TWBB?

If it's TWBB I read a review where the reviewer praised the movie for showing "the true face of evil that is oil companies" so I figured if i wanted to see that i would watch an Al Gore speech,no need to pay money for it.

If it's NCFOM the whole time i was watching it i felt like I was seeing a modern and less deep take on TG,TB,ATU.

I think TG,TB,ATU is much better that is why I don't think NCFOM should have won best picture.

I loved the post outlining how TG,TB,ATU was better that is how i felt while watching it.

FWIW, I make snap judgments like that all of the time.  For example, I will never watch The Legend of Bagger Vance (I think I got the title right), because it is a "magical negro" picture.  Similarly, I tend to avoid "the feel-good movie of the year" like the plague, no matter what it is.  So far, this has caused me to  miss some acknowledged dogs like Patch Adams, What Dreams May Come, and Hope Floats.  To me, that far outweighs missing out on the occasional "decent" movie like As Good as It Gets.  (I've never seen it either, but people tell me I am being stubborn.)

What Dreams May Come is dead depressing. So you should watch it. I guess it's a feel good movie if you like suicide.

Has anyone out there seen it and read the book?

It's an adaptation of the Bhagavad Gita but I can't bring myself to watch the film.

Yeah, I do snap judgments like that as well.  Often based on how annoying the trailer is, or whether it has a "sassy motown soundtrack" playing.

Or if it features Julia Roberts.

Good warning signs all.

Most Julia Roberts' films also feature a sassy Motown soundtrack, so you're "double-bagging" it.  That's never a bad thing in this case.

I've never even heard of a "magical negro" film other than Bagger Vance. Unless you count every Morgan Freeman movie.
