Deadpool: The Merc with a Movie

[RoninFox]

I was put in charge of planning a reward for my department at work. Since we passed our last audit with flying colors my supervisor told me we can take four hours off paid one day and take everyone out for "some kind of activity."

That activity is seeing Deadpool 2 at a theater with a full bar tomorrow.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD SO TURN BACK NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T seen Deadpool 2 yet!
Just got back from seeing Deadpool 2. It was pretty damn funny. About 85% of the jokes landed for me and the rest, well, I'd just have to chalk that up to a lack of subtitles. Now, if you're going to ask me which is better, Deadpool 2 or Infinity war?

First I'd have to say that's an unfair question or comparison because they're about as apples and oranges as you can get(but I guess I can give it a shot). Infinity War is first and foremost a superhero movie supported by some great character drama and a ton of incredibly fun and inspired moments. Deadpool 2... well let's not kid around, Deadpool is first and foremost an antihero and his second outing is no less a comedy than the first. The thing is that just like Infinity war, the dramatic moments are never undercut by the humor in the film. Deadpool 2, as much as it likes to poke fun at any emotional moment actually has the power to give us some profound and thoughtful moments. Also, just like Infinity War each character has a chance to shine... especially Domino. Oh, and Josh Brolin as Cable was outstanding too.

I guess the biggest difference is that in Infinity War we've had a decade becoming emotionally attached to Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye and the Guardians over the last four years. Also, I think one big advantage is Infinity War's scope. It's not just a movie that takes place on Earth, it's events are forever reaching and yet somehow in the face of that...ending, there's still a ray of hope left behind.

With Deadpool 2, you definitely get closure, but there's a potential problem with all the humor. Being a comedy first in my opinion makes the movie suffer a little bit. Although Deadpool is an antihero, I don't feel any particular bond with him. Also... Deadpool 2 doesn't really have a straightforward antagonist. In the beginning you get the feeling that it's Cable, but then he kinda changes sides... so I'm here thinking that the true villain of the movie is just... circumstances? Okay, you could argue Juggernaut or Russell Collins, but in both cases... and again, just my opinion, they're fine, but they're no Thanos.

So in conclusion, although the Tomatometer has Deadpool 2 and Infinity war neck and neck at about... 84%(last I checked anyway). It's still not even a tough decision for me, Infinity War still easily wins the day as the better superhero film. Mostly because even though I've seen Infinity War three times, I could easily go for a fourth viewing. Deadpool 2 just didn't appeal to me as a film that gets better with multiple viewings. Still highly recommend it though.

I agree with that review for the most part. Fun movie but I enjoyed the first one a little more. Although there's some scenes I'm still laughing about a day later. (The whole  Xforce thing)

I know, I got a HUGE laugh out of almost all the new team getting all killed in some horrible fashion, just because Deadpool didn't take the wind into account, and bear in mind I'm not a fan of blood and gore at all and I still found it funny.

Had a lot of fun with this, really enjoyable flick. I like that it just keeps rolling and you never know what's coming next, and didn't spend much time re-establishing Deadpool or anything. And I like how you do feel for the guy and there's some character and heart to go with the nuttiness.

Could it have been even better, packed even more epic in there? Sure. That's why we need Deadpool 3, 4, and 5 asap! They should get the other John Wick co-director so we can get these Deadpool movies out twice as fast.

- editor's note: I just read on the internets that the next movie will probably be X-Force and be directed and written by Drew Goddard, that sounds good to me. I'm guessing they'll save Deadpool 3 for later, kind of like Disney/Marvel did for Iron Man 3.

Deadpool 2 was AMAZING! I think I liked it even better than the first one.

I was SOOO happy with how they did Juggernaut! He's one of my favorite villains, and I was so disappointed in how he was portrayed in X-Men 3
My favorite joke in the whole movie was the deaths of most of X-Factor. I did notice the Brad Pitt cameo. And Shatterstar having greenish blood because he's an alien was a nice touch. I was dissapointed that Peter also died, because it would have been funny if after all that the only team Deadpool has left is the non superpowered guy.
I thought when Dopinder killed the headmaster and was all enthused at tasting blood for the first time that he would become the villain that killed the people in the future where Cable is from.
The mid credits scene where Deadpool killed Ryan Reynolds before he played Green Lantern. I'm surprised they didn't do a meta joke where he then never played Deadpool.

I was saying on the way out of the movie that this franchise not only gave a second chance to Deadpool, but also to Juggernaut and Colossus.

The movie was pretty great.

Spoiler

The death of X-Force was a pleasant surprised.  I suspected that Zeitgeist was going to die horribly because he also did in his first comics appearance.  Even more gruesomely than in the movie.

Julian Denison continues to be a delight, so I hope he keeps up with acting as he gets older.  He's hilarious, but I can also see him growing up to be a serious talent.

That was fantastic! The trailers gave away so little! Loved the cameos, riffing on some of the jokes from the previous film.

There was a subtle joke I missed that I saw someone point out.

Juggernaut threatens to shove Deadpool up Cable's ass, and Cable up Deadpool's ass, but in the end Collosus shoves a cable up Juggernauts ass, then he falls into the pool.

I really expected Taika Waititi to cameo as the older version of Julian.

I'm surprised that they didn't make a comment on the parallels between Deadpool and Spider-Man losing his loved one to a villain he didn't stop.
