In an attempt to try to get back on topic I found some interesting photos.  This one is a good look at the new Prime.  Which atcually doesn't look to bad to me.  And Im as hard a Generation 1 fan boy as they come.

This is a photo of some of the Transformers in thier vehicle modes.  Starting in the back and going from left to right.  Starscream.  Optimus Prime, Iron Hide, Ratchet, and Barricade.  Bumblebee and Jazz.  By no means am I a Ford fan at all, but I have to say, the Saleen Mustang police cruiser looks badass.

I read somewhere that they'll all be GM vehicles.  I think that's kind of a shame - not that the vehicles don't look both cool and appropriate, but that it's kind of obvious to my eyes when there's a deal like that. "Funny, all the 'bots are GMs... huh."

Haha, yeah.  I noticed that too and was joking around with a friend of mine a little while ago about how this movie is going to be a GM vs Ford movie.  I like the looks of all the vehicles, but it is too bad they didn't get some other vehicle licenses too.

It could be worse. They could have licensed Honda and Barricade could have been an Integra.

I think what gets me more is that to me most newer cars (1995 and up) look pretty damn similar with their molded fiberglass bodies and shapeless aerodynamic shells. The new Charger looks like the new Mustang to me. That said, the flames on Optimus look badass beyond all reason.

I thank all that is good and holly that there in not a civic among the bunch.  All in all, pretty good choices.  The voices that I've heard so far are.  Peter Cullen for Optimus Prime, Hugo Weaving for Megatron, and Keith David for Barricade.

P.S.   I know nothing about their backstory, but why would aliens look like something off a Ford assembly line?    I've always wondered that.

That's about all the backstory you'll need to answer your question....of course, the theme song lyrics from the tv show are about all the backstory I'm familiar with.

There are multipule backstories depending on what continuity you follow.  Cartoon, U.S. comic, U.K. comic, and there was also a whole different Japanese continuity.  For the film, I think they are making up their own backstory.  Its best if you want to see this film, don't get to familliar with any of the continutuies until after you see it.

From what I understand from the film trailers/toys the robots travel through space in comet shaped "ProtoForms" then when they land on Earth their disguise takes the form of something they see.  There's a shot in the trailer of Optimus Prime on a cliff, watching a truck go by, and he's slowly changing into a truck whilst making scanning noises.

I could be totally wrong about this I have no idea what any of the other explanations are
