I remember quite liking the Age of Apocalypse storyline. Not sure if it would work as well for a movie though, since we haven't had as much time in the movies to establish characters for the differences to be as meaningful. We haven't even seen Apocalypse himself yet so he isn't the established great adversary to the X-Men like he was in the comics.

As long as he suggests the hottest underground club in the city "Bamf!" It's literally underground, and the only way to reach it is to teleport three miles deep.

It was the 80's... whatever complaints you have, my answer is that. Why does Apocalypse--?... It was the 80's! Why was the music so fucking awesome? Because it was the 80's! Why aren't there any Avengers, Guardians or Ant-man? Because it was the 80's and we're not exactly following chronological comic continuity, Why does Magneto wear a weird looking coat thing? Because it was the 80's... in case you can't tell, I love the 80's.
