Can someone explain how these "bombs" are supposed to work.

I see what I assume is a propane or natural gas tank (makes sense) taped to a flare (also makes sense) taped to a smoke detector... now you've lost me.

They don't work...at all.  It's just one more delicious flaw in a smorgasbord of flaw. Hail to Thee, Sharknado. Well met, and well done

Sharks surviving for a meaningful length of time in a tornado, outside of water, and being ready to attack as they're thrown to the ground?  Perfectly fine.

But how some bombs were improvised with some propane tanks, road-flares and smoke-detectors? Well *NOW* you've lost me!

;)

Bomb goes boom, makes 'splosion.

That's the extent of the technical knowhow that went into this movie.

That's giving the show-creators a lot of credit.

I never claimed they came up with it themselves.

Gee, I wonder how many rednecks in Kansas are throwing homemade bombs to stop tornados?

Oh, wait, none. BECAUSE EVEN THEY WOULDN'T BE THAT STUPID TO THINK THAT WOULD WORK!

Although it does bring up a question for Sharknado 2. Since they've established in that universe that small explosives will dissapate tornados, why isn't the military taking care of tornados (with or without sharks) immediately?

I'm pretty sure the government tried that decades ago, and learned it doesn't work.

Right, which is why it's stupid. But I mean in the context of the movie.

Well, let us also not forget that in the Sharknado universe that things that need to manipulate the air in order to fly (that is, everything that flies) can do so perfectly fine in a tornado.

Also that sharks are apparently able to "steer" in the air.

i understand- just a little trivia I remembered watching on TV ages ago.  In the context of the movie? Hmm. I would guess that the idea never crossed anyone's mind, as Ronin Fox suggested earlier.  8)
