Sony
Pulls the Plug on 'The Interview'
7 minutes ago BY TMZ STAFF

Sony has pulled the plug on the XMAS release of "The Interview," after a number of theater chains bailed.

TMZ broke the story Thursday morning ... Sony execs felt their out was if distributors yanked the film because of safety concerns. That would give Sony an out without directly bending to the hackers.

Sony just released a statement, saying, "In light of the decision by the majority "The Interview," we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release."

The statement goers on, saying, "We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public."

The execs are underscoring the distinction between pulling the film because of the distributors rather than out of fear, saying, "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

I will never pay to see a Sony movie again.

Soguru

This is freaky. No, no, BEYOND freaky. I'm not sure what to say.

Fuck North Korea!
I'd Release it anyway cause all they do is make whining, cry baby, empty threats when they don't get their way! :grr:

I wasn't even going to see it before, I thought it looked stupid. Now I want to. Good job advertising the movie you hate North Korea.
Sell it online, Sony. It would be perfect on so many levels.

e: Wow, apparently Sony has no plans to release it at all. Thanks for proving that terrorism works you cowards.

I hope you're prepared to also never see a movie in a Carmike, Cinemark, Regal or AMC theater too, since those chains dropping the movie is what led to this.  I'm personally disappointed in the call, but it's also hard for me to judge them.  On the off chance that something did happen, the amount of shit that Sony and the theater chains would have to deal with would be crazy.

The odds of anything actually, genuinely happening had this movie mad theaters are so infinitesimal as to be utterly laughable. The talk of employee safety (more of the electronic info kind than the exploding kind) on the part of theaters has some merit, but ultimately this is a large company caving in to blackmail and terrorist demands. It is a crummy situation that sets worse precedent.

All for a movie that looked to be moderately funny and (likely) ultimately forgettable. That I also wanted to see, and, admittedly, now more than ever.

If they posted it online, I would easily pay $30 or so to watch it.

This is no different than the Muhamed crap a few years ago.  You can't give into this crap.

BathTub

Easily one of the strangest movie stories in a while. I can't believe the threats actually seemed to have worked.

Darth Geek

I just heard about this a few minutes ago. It's insane. Regardless of the actual quality of the movie, this never should happen.
And this is the kind of thing that really starts a bad precedent.

Besides, based on the trailer doesn't it make the most sense comedically for the twist at the end to be that Kim Jong Un actually has all of the abilities that he claims?

I think this is an awful shame and I'm hoping that somehow Rogen, Franco and Goldberg can buy back their movie to do things themselves (I'm sure some company would like to promote it as "the film THEY didn't want you to see!"

Also, considering that North Korea is the king of empty threats, this seems really dumb.  I think everyone should watch Team America this weekend.  At least we get to see one coachroach defeated (I was always disappointed the "I hate you Alec Baldwin" song never made it into the soundtrack").

Hopefully, Sausage Party won't be pulled by irate kielbasa.

Some Alamo Drafthouse theaters are showing Team America in place of The Interview, which only intensifies my desire to have an Alamo Drafthouse near where I live.

Like.  It occurs to me that The Great Dictator would also be a good choice.
