Does the IRS have Nicholas Cage over a barrel?  Is that why he made this movie?
Pretty much. I think he is finally getting his tax problems dealt with, but this is one of the films he agreed to when he had to make money to pay them off.

I'd be far more interested in seeing a movie for This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti.

Agreed! Now those were some epic badass books. They did have the occasional spots where the plot would stop dead so it could preach a little, or someone would convert. But they were relatively short and few and far between.

Really glad to see it doing so poorly at the box office. Granted we don't know the budget apparently to see if it made a profit. But hopefully this means no sequels.

Based on this, it sounds like just kind of a "meh" bad movie, not a fun one (and, as others have mentioned, there are probably reasons why Rifftrax has stayed away from overtly religious movies):

Yeah, this movie is apparently quite boring. Largely because they focus this movie on the initial events, and not the Anti-Christ and aftermath stuff.

So, again, why cast Nicholas Cage and NOT have him play the Anti-Christ?!

This question could be applied to all of his films.  Even the good ones.

I still think his early work was good, up until Con Air or The Rock, that's when things turned south.  Seems like he has been playing the same character ever since.   It's like he's always playing a caricature of himself, in movies that call for that it fits (Kick Ass for instance), others not so much...

Oh, he can be a great actor, even now.  But lately it's been a mix of being in poor movies and making poor decisions in movies.  Still, with the right roles (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans and Joe, for example) he can bring it.  But he does seem to lack a range that you can argue he had in the past.
