A good chunk of that money is sure to get cancelled before the kickstarter is over.  It's gone up and down a lot already.

QuoteThe Kickstarter Potato Salad Guy Just Lost Nearly $30,000
The Huffington Post

Is the potato salad party already over?

Not quite yet, but the campaign appears to have lost nearly $30,000 overnight. On Wednesday evening, the guy who started the project, Zack Brown, had more than $70,000 with which to make his salad. On Thursday morning, that number had fallen to $43,984.

So what happened? It's hard to know -- Brown did not immediately respond to a request for comment and hasn't posted any updates to the project's homepage. One possibility is that people regret donating their hard-earned dollars to the campaign and are canceling their pledges.

Kickstarter's rules discourage, but do not prohibit, people from taking back their donations.

Yeah, not planning to move my pledges for Robotech, the Lost Skeleton of Caldavra sequel and the new Zombicide release for the year for the potato salad.

This potato salad project is essentially this:

He's an idiot, and people are willing to give him money. As one guy I know said, he hit the Kickstarter lottery. Way to go, and the only thing proven is the old David Hannum adage, "There's a sucker born every minute." Good job, suckers, continue pissing away your money. Do I wish every one of these people would give their money to a worthier goal? Sure. I can think of at least one GoFundMe campaign right now that I wish would get every cent of it. But we can't demand people do worthy things with their money or time. We can only encourage it and hope they will.

Pak-Man

It happens every now and then. Sometimes people on the Internet from all walks of life come together with one unified goal: To say "Derrrrrrr...."

Darth Geek

Why the insults? It's just some guy who thought he'd do something silly on Kickstarter. He clearly didn't take it seriously, or try to scam anybody, that's why the original goal was $25! And it just snowballed on him.

That's sort of my feelings towards it too. I'm assuming everyone that pledged more than $2 will remove it in the end, but that means he could still end up with a couple grand for making a dumb joke. Which is good for him, IMO. Kid just managed to put a down payment on a car or pay some student loans or whatever because a bunch of people saw his joke, laughed, and decided to give him a buck. I don't think anyone is going to say "well, I was going to support this game/movie/etc, but that dollar I gave to that potato salad guy expended my entertainment budget"

RVR II

Well we all need to think of something brilliant that people will support 8)

Pak-Man

Oh, I'm not insulting Potato Salad guy. I'm insulting the menality that says, "Hey, wouldn't it be hilarious if I gave this guy my money?"

Space version 2.0

I just wish people would pay me a dollar for my dumb jokes.

That's what iRiffs are for.

And moving on from Potato salad guy (still at 50k!), we head towards Yogscast.

Two years ago, Yogscast had a very successful Kickstarter for an adventure game with a final total of $567,000. It entered beta last August and today, well, it got cancelled. The development team basically said that they ran out of money and it's probably a good thing since the project had gotten too big for their 6 person team and it likely wouldn't have ended up being very good. That may not hae been the brightest thing to say.

Needless to say, the backers seem a bit annoyed about the situation.

The Yogscast folks are offering a free game to compensate, but again, that's not mollifying some of the backers.  Granted, Yogscast technically doesn't need to offer refunds because a) Kickstarter rules and b) they weren't the people who launched the Kickstarter in the first place. But a high dollar failure like this (the 39th most funded video game project by my count) is going to just add fuel to the "Kickstarter is just a giant scam" fire.
