Very good write-up, RD. You nail pretty much my feelings exactly. Especially about how in this movie just like all the other Godzilla flicks, nobody cares about the stuff between the monster fights. So while here they are done rather well, they are still the "jangling of keys" to distract us while they are gathering up models (and budget) for monster battles. Which is why I guess we shouldn't be all that surprised that they became more and more campy as the series went on, since that is more distracting. I don't see this series going in that direction, so I would just hope in sequels they cut more and more of that out entirely. Again, Hollywood, does anybody remember how to make an hour and a half long movie anymore?
I'm glad you point out the Navy Admiral, who I thought was depicted very well here. Even though the bomb turns out to be a huge McGuffin for the third act, him using it never seemed like the usual kind of gun-nut "lets just blow everything up" military general we get in this type of movie. Ironically, Ken Watanabe and his assistant lady's characters treat him like he is after a while, and because of that feel like they suddenly were out of a different movie. Watanabe in particular got annoying once he started going into his "balance of nature" bullshit because he wasn't being helpful anymore.

QuoteThe incredible return of Godzilla was driven by a variety of factors. Many analysts were quick to peg the reptile's return as a likely underperformer, citing the disappointing performance of the creature's 1998 cinematic outing and the dominance of superheroes as reasons audiences would turn an indifferent eye to the monster reboot. The picture now looks on track to pass $700 million in worldwide earnings. It will also cause studios to rethink their release slate strategy.

Godzilla Final Wars is amazing.  It even has a Katana Wielding Super Mario.

Walmart was selling 2-pack blu-rays of some of the more recent Godzilla movies. I've always wanted to see Final Wars, so I picked that up and it comes with SOS Tokyo. Only $13 a pop.

Yeah, that guy was hilarious. Like Sgt. Slaughter and Tom Selleck had a lovechild.

Thank you for that image! Now I can just try the kind of good ones. Also, I watched a bit of Final Wars... and it is insane in a way that borders on glorious.

Oh yeah and I saw Godzilla too. I loved all of it. Contrary to a lot of people, it seems, I never found myself waiting for Godzilla. Ten minutes in or so, I no longer cared if Godzilla ever showed up. I thought the surrounding plot and characters were that good. Of course, when he DID show, I was floored by the sheer sense of scale that they managed to capture. I'd like to study those scenes and try to figure out how they achieved it so well. And his roar seriously made me feel like an ant. You know immediately that there is no stopping him, and that every person and being is at his mercy. His presence is truly awesome, in every sense of the word. I may have never been so in awe of anything in any movie, ever.

Funny, as soon as I saw this my first thought was "Freddy Mercury, the right arm of the Shogun."

Just ordered and printed my ticket for the 130pm Godzilla 3D showing for tomorrow.  And I will have a beer and Italian pizza for lunch tomorrow.  Great way to spent a vacation day on your birthday.

Come on Godzilla, I am COUNTING on you.

Bob

Now in theatre waiting for 3D joy

Despite the movie starting late as a PC error message filled up the screen (they show movies on a PC and not on film anymore?  when did this happen?), the 3D movie was great.  The 3D actually made sense and was not crap like someone making popcorn or other bad stuff like that.

I will enjoy buying the 3D DVD when it comes out.

Yeah, normally I don't like 3D but I thought they utilized it well in this movie.

Saw it, enjoyed it, though the human parts dragged just a little bit.  I wonder, though, considering a certain scene in the movie...
