(I love the fact that they have to post "model shown for scale"... since obviously a number of people would expect that she would come with it. ::))

Beat me to it.

Being completely insane I bought one of the few Diamond Select toy Enterprise models that went on say at Amazon for $45 and ripped out the electronics, put the electronics in a box and mounted it on the stand for my big model.

Pressing the Enterprise patch activates the sounds and lights.  Switch on the side puts it in demo mode so you can hear Kirk call for battle stations (in the actual model that switch is behind the battery door that you need a screwdriver to open, kind of stupid).  Added a little door with electrical tape hinge for the big model spare parts.  LEDs on the sides of the Star Trek logo are the ones from the bussard collectors.  On the sides I put some of the left over clear plastic parts from the big model with the red and green navigational blinkers inside lighting them up.

I'll probably build a nicer box in the future but for now this will do:

As for the Diamond Select toy, I didn't do too much damage taking it apart so I managed to put it all back together, filled in the damage with putty and gave the entire thing a base coat of paint.  Someday I might make it into the Constellation with all the damage done by the doomsday machine...

I'm really glad I never bought one of those toys at full price, not very good quality.  Odd since their communicator, phaser, and tricorder are pretty well made.

Funny that you say that; my only Star Trek ship is one of those DST Enterprises. :)

I'm guessing you got the older TOS version?

It seems the quality really dropped off, over at the hobbytalk forum people that got the same one I got (the HD re-issue) said it was bad, but people that got the older TOS version said it was a nice model.   The one I got had some warped plastic, uneven printing, bad gluing in spots.  If I paid full price and wasn't going to tear it apart I would not have been happy with it.

Yeah, I got the original one before the "HD".  The only thing I don't like about it is that it kind of falls off the stand.

To make that ball joint more "stiff" people say to put future floor polish on it.  That stuff gets used by a lot of people that build models, I haven't tried it on anything but it is used as a clear coat and a weak glue.

Not sure I like the image quality on that rug, but this measuring cup set is pretty darn tempting:

Still building models, as hobbies go it's not super expensive and does kill a lot of time.

2 little ships to go with my giant one:

The Romulan ship is about ready for decals, the Klingon needs some more painting.  The little Enterprise in the kit is going to take a while to do the micro painting on...

Oh, and I am still slowly converting that toy Enterprise I tore the electronics out of into the constellation, finally made some inkjet decals that work, it takes a while, the the ink has to be very dry, then spray a special sealer on and let that dry, then you can use the decals.

Test image, those will be removed so I wasn't real careful with placement, just testing for size and look:

This is the worst model in the kit of 3 little TOS ships, bad seams, bad alignments, weird huge windows that had to be sanded off.   Since I got the kit for the other 2 ships I should have just shelved this one, but couldn't resist trying to make it passable, and it did kill at least 8 hours over the last several days:

To dispel some of the misconceptions about head injuries you have developed from watching movies and TV, I wrote this: ...Some Information on Head Injury Effects

Those are pretty incredible for their size.
The Klingon D7 is really impressive for such a small model.  They did a nice job getting detail on that.  I've got a 1:1000 kit for that but now I'm in no hurry to build it.

There is a 1:1000 Reliant coming out soon, with that and the 1:1000 Space Seed kit it will be possible to build all the ships Khan took over in the same scale.  Maybe do the 1:1000 refit (first 3 movies) next, or start really working on getting the Constellation fixed up nice and then tear it up with damage from The Doomsday Machine...

Woot had a big sale on Star Trek models last week, picked up the 1:350 NX-01.  Not sure when I'll mess with that but $50 was too good a deal to pass up, they had the big E model I just finished for $80, $40 less than what I paid 3 months ago.

Got the Constellation all pretty, now starting to rip it up...

I am NOT doing that....

That picture is only the first step, it's going to take a lot more work to thin the edges of the damaged areas so they look true to scale, and then add stuff inside to look like decks and walls.

I have the idea of imbedding bits of clear plastic into the saucer to simulate damage from the bussard collectors exploding.  Not sure I'm going to pull that off, although the test with a big chunk taking out the bridge seems to look OK (in the episode they say the bridge is uninhabitable).

Realistic damage to the bussard collectors and the rest of the nacelles is going to be even harder.  We'll see how that goes.

Sideswipe

You pretty much need to melt the bussard colletors right off.  They were all burned away in the episode.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.
