Facepalm Theater

I have been a huge fan of mst3k since I was a kid,
And I have been a rifftrax fan since I heard about it in 2008.
I'm about to begin my first Iriff,
And figured I should join the forum.

RoninFox

Welcome to the boards.  Care to share your Iriff target, or do you want to keep that under wraps for now?

Welcome! And glad to see another iRiffer here.

Facepalm Theater

Thanks, guys!
I'm still looking,
but I'm pretty sure I'm going to riff on "werewolf in a girls dormitory".
I am brand new at this.
I've been making fun of movies with my dad my whole life,
And I've been a huge fan of Mike, Bill and Kevin since I started watching mst3k in 98.
I've never tried to script before, so this should be interesting.
I've got a basic idea of how to go about it,
But do you have any advice for a noob?

Johnny Unusual

Watch the movie to make sure there's really enough in the film to sink your teeth into.

Go over each scene and joke with a fine toothed comb.  Usually, often the best stuff is the stuff that just comes right out of you, but you need to think about joke pacing, timing, different kinds of jokes, different approaches.  By the time you are done, a good riffer should know the nooks and crannies better than the film maker, though you are free to flush it from your memory when you are done.

Do multiple takes.  I've only done a couple, but I cringe at all the flubbed lines we kept in there.  And sometimes, even with the same line, a slightly different cadence or timing is the difference between it being funny in theory or being sold.

Also, J.C. Walsh and ICWXP did riffs of that. So I would write riffs for it, get your script the way you want it first, and then watch their riffs to eliminate any of the same jokes.

Facepalm Theater

Oh man.
I think maybe I'll choose another one.
that sucks, I already started writing.
Buuuut I don't want something that's been riffed twice already.

Darth Geek

There have been plenty of other movies with multiple riffs. And especially since it would be a VOD, it shouldn't be a big deal.

RoninFox

I'll back up Johnny by saying multiple takes can be very important.

Lately we've changed the way we record.  We used to play the movie while performing the lines directly to it.  Now we go through the script line by line, recording them after speaking the time codes, usually repeating them several times.  Then I go back and edit the lines to the movie, keeping the best takes and noting if we need retakes.  Very rarely, I'll be unable to make a line fit with the movie and we'll record that one to the movie itself so we can hear the rhythem of the scene better.

What program are you using to record/edit?

I'm using my music equipment.
I use a dp 08 track recorder,
and Sony acid pro when I need more tracks.
I'm using a shure 58 Mike.
And I'm using movie maker to sync up.

Welcome, Freak.

Speaking of iriffs, I've been wanting to watch some but can't find the thread with recommendations (a top ten of the best maybe?). Can someone provide a link so I don't start another thread? Or should I start a thread?

And yeah, I doubt I could pull off an unscripted riff,
or even a scripted riff in one take.

I will probably choose a new one,
As I don't have the money to buy an ICWXP episode at the moment.
My kids eat all of my extra money lol
Any suggestions for public domain flicks that haven't been riffed yet?

EDIT* I posted this before I saw the last post.
Thanks, @losingmyidentity and @Darth Geek
