I am really shocked that "Grindhouse" didn't do better at the box office.  Apparently it did pretty badly!  According to Rottentomatoes it was because of a negative reaction by women, but damn!  I really thought it would rule this weekend!  My wife was pretty typical, in that she thought it was stupid, so I had to go with a guy friend of mine... but... what the hell, girls???!!!

Don't look at me, man. The group of five I went with yesterday was 80% female.

LOL!!!  Yeah I hear, ya, Beenie!  Studies show that it's usually women that decide the movie, so that's where I was coming from.  But, you know I was just joking, right?  The last thing I would ever want to do is offend you.  As I was typing this crap I was thinking, "I hope all this crap doesn't offend Beenie..."

Damn.  It turns out you didn't offend Beenie.  Not to worry.  I know something that WILL.  Even worse, I actually MEAN what I'm about to say.

It sure is a shame women tend to decide on which movie is seen, because very few "chick flicks" are any good - in fact, a good "chick flick" is not really a chick flick, but is good because it goes outside the boundaries of its genre (rather than simply bucking convention).  Furthermore, a conventional guy movie tends to be more generally entertaining (albeit sometimes unintentionally) than the average rom-com's and rom-dram's typically targeted toward female audiences.  Compare Commando to You Got Mail.  Which would you rather watch?

Sure, relationships can make for compelling stories, but can you name me ONE truly GREAT movie that could reasonably fit the vague definition of "chick flick?"  I can think of a couple romantic comedies that were really great (namely Annie Hall and, to a lesser extent, When Harry Met Sally) - but only because they also appealed to male sensibilities, and were written chiefly from the masculine perspective (the primitive, caveman-like idea that romantic COMEDIES should actually focus on being funny, and that STUFF SHOULD HAPPEN in movies).

I don't know why this is.  Maybe there are more opportunities for directors to showcase a dynamic, fast-paced visual style in movies that center around action or non-romantic dramatic intrigue than for the more pedestrian romance (sans genre blending).  A good love story CAN work (i.e. Casablanca), but it needs a damn good background and a helluva lot of exterior drama going on around it to make a whole film (i.e. um...Casablanca)

I really can't think of a coherent reason as to why this is so.  My best support is the PHYSICAL evidence - the films themselves.  Take a look at the IMDB top 250 if you want just one example.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

I'm not offended at all. In fact, I think you make some really good points. One of the ways in which Death Proof works (in spite of its sometimes EXTREME talkiness) is that it bucks the chick-flick trend by featuring women for whom vigilante violence is the FIRST response, instead of the absolute last resort, to be turned to only after all the ineffectual "legal" steps have been tried (Sleeping With The Enemy, Enough, etc.). I find this depiction refreshing, especially considering that, in real life, women who are murdered are FREQUENTLY murdered by men they know, and whom they have often legal action such as restraining orders against. Remember ladies: the way to stop a would be attacker is not by lamely blowing a whistle or repeating "empowering" slogans to yourself; it's by putting a bullet directly into his brain. Violent people only speak ONE language, and if you don't know how to speak it, they will ignore your entreaties and do as they wish to you. Buy a gun and learn how to use it.

yes actually.

it happened one night

A great movie, completely enjoyable.  one of only 3 movies to ever win the big five (actor, actress, director, screenplay, and movie) at the oscars.

Also My fair lady now that i am thinking of it.

Also, right after Planet Terror a lot of people left in my showing too.  Including a woman with three 8-10 year old kids (wtf?)

Ah, childhood memories.

B-movies are simply movies that are good, or great, but not art.

Are we back to defining art?  Didn't we cover that?

I wasn't trying to define art. I was referring to what is considered "art" in a traditional sense. Quentin Tarantino himself never set out to make art. He's always stated that he's just trying to make movies that he finds entertaining, as opposed to "films" that are studied, and dissected, or whatever.

If anything it will make it apparent to the rest of the world that Americans are in fact psychotic.  >:D They should definitely show it in Iran, just drop DVD's from a plane, they may just give up now.

There was one interview with QT that said they filmed a lot more than what was used here.

Exactly!!  The missing reel in Planet Terror worked well! I thought it was funny as hell.
