I also LOVED Grindhouse. I told my dad that it was probably the most enjoyable experience I have ever had while watching a movie. I just had so much fun, I didn't care about story or plot or character development. I just sat back relaxed and enjoyed it.

Pure fun.

Surely it's not THAT different a market to '300'?  Damn wusses keeping it out of the top 3!

T-rants and I were speaking about the poor BO for Grindhouse and he brought up a valid point. This was released during what could be the worst possible weekend for it. It was , for many, a long weekend but also a family oriented weekend. Anyone going to the movies was going to see family themed stuff like Meet the Robinsons. Are We Done Yet is rather bizzarely doing much better than anticipated, but it shows more of the point of this. To release a hard R movie during this weekend was pretty stupid really. It will have legs and stay up for a few weeks and make all it's money back before DVD (which will sell like hotcakes, and it's already primed for either a double dip or a 'mini box set ' approach.
It's not the failure they reporters are making it out to be, but it is a study of how to not time your release!
This should have been scheduled up to come a week after 300 primed the pumps, or waited and wiggled in around Spiderman 3 (not the same weekend as anything else released that weekend will only be in sacrifice.)
Timing, timing, timing!
Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

personally i would have just waiting for october.  two reasons

1) it seems the internet buzz was pretty hot by release, it would have gone near nuclear by the time it was released then,
2) the zombie aspect can pushed to make it seem more appropriate for halloween for a more wide stream audience.  The fact it has a niche appeal then becomes bonus.

Family Comedies are always gonna do better than ultra-violent flicks. Grindhouse excludes certain demographics and "Are We Done Yet" doesn't. :^)

Except for the economically insignificant "smart people" demographic.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Well, that was a waste of 3+ hours.   :-
I didn't like either movie...though Planet Terror at least had a shot by providing some of the finest T&A I've seen in a major studio release (Rose McGowan is officially the sexiest woman in movies now).  In the end it was too silly, too tongue in cheek, too gory, too stupid.
DeathProof had problems too, I found the first 4 some stupid, vapid, unsympathetic and ONE THE SCREEN WAY TOO LONG.  Their killing was gruesome, and shown over and over again.  And the killing of Rose McGowan's character was unforgivable.  Kurt Russell was ultra cool at first.  Then, inexplicably he gets turned into a whining, sniveling worm who gets beaten by the Girl Power trio while music from the Mary Tyler Moore show plays.  WTF????
  I really loved:
Rose McGowan
Stacy Ferguson's body
Michel Biehn getting work
Everything about Rosario Dawson....I'd give up being single for her
Kurt Russell's performance right before he starts killing.

My question, if you assemble that amount of talent, like we had in Grindhouse....why not make GOOD movies?  Seriously, why not make GOOD genre films.  You had most of the ingredients right freaking there.

Well, that's my $.02

Mark, Mark, Mark, my friend, you totally didn't get it.  It was SUPPOSED to be a bad movie.  It was a tribute to bad movies.  Movies that I grew up watching and that made MST3K what it was...

THE CHICK HAD A FRIGGIN GUN FOR A LEG!!!!  There's your Academy Award right there!

Whether it was supposed to be a  "Bad" movie or a "Good" movie, I just wish Tarantino would make another  "real" movie.

I haven't seen DEATH PROOF, but Tarantino seems to have let the dialogue ramble on and on yet again.   I know it was intentional, a slow burn until the explosive ending...
Here's what James Berardinelli wrote in his review for KILL BILL 2:

"Quentin Tarantino needs a new editor - someone who can convince him to make the really hard cuts. Sally Menke, who has held that post for all of Tarantino's movies, couldn't/wouldn't/didn't convince the ego-centric filmmaker that eliminating about 30 minutes of filler from Kill Bill Volume 2 would have made it a leaner, meaner motion picture."

Good and Bad are entirely subjective, my opinion is usually the polar opposite of most people's.

There was one thing about Death Proof that really irked me:

It's Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, MICK and Tich.

Not Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mitch and Tich.
