Yeah, I tend to be the only person in the theatre laughing sometimes. Like in the otherwise boring-to-tears Lost In Translation, when Bill Murray's sitting sheepishly in the hospital waiting room with a giant stuffed owl on his lap. Oops, sorry - I forgot the movie was supposed to be deeply thought-provoking.

I posted this in another thread, but yes, this was amazing. Tarantino's part was heavy on the dialogue, but the first "kill scene" was absolutely brilliant, and of course the last 30 minutes were fantastic as well.

I enjoyed Planet Terror more also, but I mean... come on. It was almost nonstop mayhem. And the timing for the "missing scene" could not have been more perfect.

"Looks like a no-brainer!"

Just got back from seeing it! It was freaking FUN AS HELL!! I had a good audience that "got it" and we all laughed and cheered and gasped at all the right times. I know I will be seeing it again this week!!

Don't worry Pyro, people say that too me when I laugh at gore too.

ha, I'm not worried, the entire theater was in hysterics during that scene the first time I saw it so I know there's plenty of freaks out there still...... I just remembered though my dad was "movie theater crying" during Pan's Labyrinth when the little girl is shot and he gave me shit when I busted out laughing at that scene

Favorite character: El Wray. El Wray was tight. They don't give him the guns, so he uses the knives, and does get a single drop of blood on him.

And is it just me, or was anyone else ecstatic when Fergie got eaten?

"Yay! No more London Bridges or Humps or lady lumps or anything! Yay!"

Update: I guess Planet Terror and Death Proof were actually much longer movies that were cut down to the bone to fit into the 3 hour Grindhouse scheme.

Tarantino says the full versions of both movies are gonna be released on DVD, possibly separately, which reinforces that you must go see in theaters to get the actual full-blown grindhouse experience.

Here's the link from Rotten Tomatoes

According to "Moriarty" the rep at Aint it cool news, Neil Cumpston is NOT Patton Oswald, in no uncertain terms.  I always thought it was him, as well.  If he's not Patton, he is a student of the great comedian, because they do have similar comedic sensibilities.

Patton is awesome.

Neil's style also reminds me a lot of online record reviewer Mark Prindle.  He makes a lot of similar jokes and deliberate misstatements of fact in his reviews (and he's been around awhile - ten years).
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

The Ood: The Beast and his armies will rise from the pit to make war against God.
Rose: I'm sorry?
The Ood: Apologies. I said: I hope you enjoy your meal.

What about the rape scene with Quentin. Ohhhh, I still got that seared into my gray matter.

He's great for suggestions on people like Sun City Girls, Residents, Polvo, etc...

I absolutely loved Grindhouse.  What's really terrific about it is how, taken individually, both Planet Terror and Death Proof would be fun yet completely disposable movies.  The presentation of them together, though, with all the trailers and "Feature Presentation" cards and scratched prints, missing reels, etc., it turns it into a brilliant work of art:  the poetry of trash.  The hyper-kineticism of Planet Terror was perfectly complemented by the slow-burn build of Death Proof.  I hope they release it on DVD exactly as it is in theaters, because the whole package is one of the major reasons why I liked it as much as I did.

Also, Edgar Wright's trailer was by far my favorite.  When Nick Frost popped up as the giant demented baby, I was in tears of laughter.  "Don't!"

robertraur

I've seen this movie twice and can easily say this is the best movie so far this year.  I can understand people's frustration with Death Proof, and I feel that the movie would have been better served if they switched positions and ended with Planet Terror.  Nevertheless, both screenings I attended ended with thunderous applause.

Also, while the legnth did not affect me, I saw numerous people leaving the theater around the halfway mark.  The lack of a break, as well as a general ignorance of Grindhouse movies hurt its sales this weekend.  This movie, while potentially a failure for its theatrical run, will be a huge hit on DVD.  Here's to a Machete movie and a sequel to Grindhouse.
Anytime someone offers you 10,000 to 1 odds, you take it.
Lets just say if John Mellancamp ever wins an Oscar, I'll be a rich man.

MisterRiffley

i want them to make "don't." that was by far my favorite of all the fake trailers, although werewolf women of the SS was no slouch. ditto "thanksgiving." dude. the splits scene! totally not okay.

i'm sure somebody else already commented on this but the theme song for "death proof" -- that was the music under the opening credits for "village of the giants," was it not? totally six degrees of MST3k.

anybody who hasn't seen vanishing point and dirty mary, crazy larry -- see them! they're both great movies.

The new interview on AICN with Quentin and Rodriguez points highly to the possibility - nay, eventuality - of Rodriguez doing a full length MACHETE feature. I for one, cannot wait.

I am really shocked that "Grindhouse" didn't do better at the box office.  Apparently it did pretty badly!  According to Rottentomatoes it was because of a negative reaction by women, but damn!  I really thought it would rule this weekend!  My wife was pretty typical, in that she thought it was stupid, so I had to go with a guy friend of mine... but... what the hell, girls???!!!

I mean, the chick has a friggin' GUN FOR A LEG!!!  What's NOT to love??!??!!

A GUN FOR A LEG!!!  *sheesh*
