Variety of Cells

A place to ask the forum for some input.  There are a lot of helpful people here, so I thought I'd make a place to ask a question and get some feedback.

To start with, I'm trying to convince my parents to get an archery set for their ample backyard.  Anyone into archery here?  What would be a good bow to start with for the family?  I don't foresee children being involved, just adults.

my dad does archery (longbow), and from half-paying-attention, from easiest to hardest to use: compound, recurve, longbow.

Was thinking about probably getting a compound bow so my mom can do it too.  Might have to just go to a sporting store and see what they have to say.

I lost interest here. Children are smaller, harder to hit, more evasive. Overall, they seem like a greater challenge.

Just make sure you make it clear you're looking at target archery not sporting.

Had a kid turn up to the camp I was Program Director of, whose parents knew there were archery ranges, with a sporting bow that had enough heft to have put an arrow through the targets and potentially into a kid at one of the neighbouring camps. It stayed in the camp office for the duration of his time there.

Yeah, I've only had one session with a compound bow, I think most of them are set up for pretty high draw weight.
The sights are really cool though, I can see them being great for hunting but seems like cheating for target practice.

They make adjustable compound bows, so you can set the draw weight to match the strength of the person using it.  But a quick search shows most of them seem to be for little kids, I would think someone makes a full size one that is adjustable.

Used to have a regular fiberglass bow when I was a kid, got pretty good with it, then got bored with it.

Yeah most of my searching produced results for kids as well.  This is the closest thing I could find to what I was looking for so far.  Adjustable so everyone can use it, and well built. http://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Pro-Right-Handed-Black/dp/B0001M4C2O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3FNZVW22UO5J7&coliid=IYNNYR0W6LTKW&psc=1

$186 is a hare more than I had want to spend, but not bad enough to put it out of the question.  I would prefer to get something that's not going to break on the first go, like I fear a lot of the junior bows would do.

Anyone going to watch the oscars streaming online?  If so, where will you watch it?  Is there even a place that streams it?  I didn't really care about last years oscars so I didn't look, but this year there are a few films I hope that win.

I haven't watched it in so many years... I'm slowly starting to remember all the commercials and awful red carpet stuff and the film industry constantly patting itself on the back... and taking forever to get to any of the awards your actually interested in.  So yeah, not the end of the world if I miss it.  But I do want to see some of the acceptance speeches.

Some.

William Friedkin, an Academy Award-winning film director and former producer of the ceremony, described it as "the greatest promotion scheme that any industry ever devised for itself".

Did he soon thereafter get a special award for stating the obvious?

Ended up going very low tech and got a set top antenna.  Ended up working alright, but it's quite hard to get a signal now that everything is digital.  I remember there being some slack in the analog days where maybe it sounded and looked a little fuzzy but you could still make out what it was.  But now either you have a signal and it looks great, or you don't have a signal and you can't hear anything.  It's made worse when it's cloudy out and I lose signal every fifteen minutes or so.
