and isn't that cumberbatch in the poster?

edit: that would certainly make more sense "the villain standing over his defeated enemy" type thing.

The poster's okay, but I don't think it could be less successful in actually advertising a Star Trek film.  Nothing about it, aside from Star Trek in thin, hard-to-read letters promises anything remotely connected with the franchise.  Weird.

J.J. Abrams doesnt like Star Trek.  He is trying to turn it into a Star Wars knock off.

He's making it accessible, which has its pros and cons. The pros being that it attracts enough of an audience to keep making them. I never watched a Star Trek movie in theaters before the reboot, and I plan on seeing this one. The downside is that the diehard fans have to make some concessions. This Star Trek is a little bit lighter on the science and a little bit heavier on the fiction. I can see why fans would hate that. It makes it more pallatable to me.

So I'm part of the problem, I guess is what I'm saying. I think I'm OK with that. :^)

Sideswipe

I don't really think turning Star Trek into generic sci fi movie is a good thing.

I don't know if the general concept of Sci-Fi with space ships is done often enough that you can even call it generic anymore.

My perspective (as a little bit of an outsider, mind you) is that you have the same crew members with the same clashing personalities doing the same stuff in the same universe. The only shift I see is the tone. The choice to focus more on the action. The Star Trek part of it still seems very much alive to me.

That would actually be the definition of generic.

Pak-Man

Granted. I put that grain of salt up front for that reason. I'm just explaining why I like it. Not telling anyone else why they should like it.

Pak-Man

Well I said, "The Star Trek part of it still seems very much alive to me." after admitting that I'm an oustider. Since we're here, though, what would you fans say is missing that would make it more specially "Star Trek?"

The writer's don't really get the characters.  It's like they grabbed some names and events off of Wikipedia and just made up the rest.  But I guess that's what a reboot is.

The relationship between Spock and Uhura completely baffles me.  Why they decided to put them together makes absolutely no sense what so ever and it did nothing to add to the story.

I assume that was based on the time in the tv series where she's singing a sort of sultry/flirty song about him. That one time.

Personally I don;t really care one way or the other but I can see why people who really enjoy the original series might be more than a little perturbed by the recent film series.

Sideswipe

Why Spock, who considered his human side a weakness would have a relationship with a human is the problem.

I know that, what I'm saying is they seem to have taken the scene I mentioned and built a relationship out of it, like that scene was a glimpse into the heart pounding hot and heavy relationship the two of them had between episodes.
