I thought Battle Royale was really good.  It was pretty disturbing, too.

I'm personally partial to Hellboy, I love Mike Mignola's work.  I'd also recommend the newer Conan volumes, the art is pretty good and they're based off the original Robert E. Howard stories.

Walking Dead is brilliant!! I dig Kirkman's whole take on a zombie infestation. I also like how he doesn't care how controversial he gets with his story. And man....has he ever pushed some limits.

I fully endorse this opinion.

Just outa curiosity, Battle Royale reminded me a lot of another movie called Series 7. If you guys havent seen it, you should check it out, its just as cheesy and fun as Battle Royale in my opinion. http://imdb.com/title/tt0251031/   Anyone else happen to see that movie? * looks in mrbaseharts direction * (dont mean to single you out, its just that you've seen everything)

It's next to 'Cube' and 'Schitzopolis' in my "have you seen this" section at home.  Hilarious, brutal and fun.

Love will tear us apart.

Just saw a commercial for a new movie called The Condemned.  Tag line: 10 people will fight. 9 people will die. You get to watch. [the same premise yet again...]

To be fair, it's all a variation on the most dangerous game.  Battle Royale just did it better (I think.  I haven't seen series seven.  With the condemned we can just assume.

Now, frankly, I don't like the term Graphic Novel.  It sounds pretentious.  Still, that's what they're using for the think books that aren't just collected stories and I got to live with it.

I'm also a little dissappointed no one said Pride of Baghdad.  That book almost made me cry.  Beautiful art and fantastic writing made this possibly the best OGN of 2006.

Looks like no one's mentioned Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier. (I linked to the awesome oversized hardcover absolute edition, also available in two TPBs.)

(Um, why is Hourman flying? Oh well. Looks cool, anyway.)

I don't have a problem with the varying definitions of "graphic novel" - as long as it tells a decent story who cares if it collects a periodical? The term does sound pretensious, but the only alternative is "comic book," which has its own connotations. Personally, individual issues are comics, and TPBs and hardcovers are just plain books. So what if they're illustrated?

Brian K. Vaughn is awesome, and Pride Of Baghdad is heartbreaking.

Next to 'Sequential Art' it sounds positively mundane  :D

It was time.  Sorry.

Anyhoo, I've been meaning to read New Frontier for a while now.

BTW, is anyone else here positively retarded for Bizarro Comics?

I picked up both hardcover collections recently (I had read the first one a while back), and I just love every panel of it.
