I'm pretty sure Hour Man's Miriclo pills (less silly sounding and more socially acceptable) allow him to fly, among other things.  But just for an hour.

Looks like no one's mentioned Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier. (I linked to the awesome oversized hardcover absolute edition, also available in two TPBs.)

(Um, why is Hourman flying?)

Pak-Man

Sorry. The correct answer:

Superman wanted to see time fly!

I think the only title worthy of the epithet 'Graphic Novel' is The Watchmen.  I'm no comic-book fan, but I picked it up at a friends house one day and had to go buy it.  Since then I've dipped into a few of the recommended comics and found them childish or vapid in comparison.  Watchmen FTW.
www.axeman3d.com for all your poor-qaulity CGI model needs.

[comics geek]Sorry, but by the strictest definition, Watchmen is a collection of 12 individually released periodicals, and therefore doesn't qualify as a graphic novel.[/comics geek]  And then my first stopped this far from his face!

I enjoy a lot of Alan Moore's work - Top 10  especially - but Watchmen left me a little flat. Maybe because it had been talked up as the greatest thing ever for so long, or maybe because I grew up reading comics that were influenced by Watchmen, I dunno. Influence on the art form acknowledged.

Hebs

Haha, I like the line in Watchmen where he's in jail and is all "You're the ones in here with ME" - creeepy.

Darwyn Cooke was the sole reason why I got into the run of CatWoman a few years ago - and once he left I felt the art starting looking mediocre.  He also came under alot of criticism when he made WonderWoman - and subsequently her Frontier action figure - fat.  Which is silly, because pretty much anything Darwyn Cooke does is amazing.

Have you read Batman: Black and White?  Paul Dini's story with Bruce Timm's artwork is Fab-freakin'-tabulous.

You should definitely check out Craig Thompson's book : GoodBye, Chunky Rice

Darwyn Cooke draws one the best Wonder Woman designs I've ever seen. She's powerful without looking like a creepy body builder chick, and sexy without looking like an anorexic model:

I love the New Frontier figures, too:

Have you read his Spirit/Batman story?  It's not bad.

Oh! That reminds me!  Everyone should read at least two Will Eisner grphic novels before they die.  "The Dreamer" changed my life - the first comic I'd ever read, and it's what made me want to draw comics in the first place.  Read it!  Love it madly!

Not yet. I just can't afford comics anymore. But once his Spirit ongoing shows up in trade, my eyes will devour it.

Did you know Darwyn Cooke designed the Batman Beyond opening titles? That's why they're so awesome.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the upcoming DVD adaptation with David Boreanz as Hal, Lucy Lawless as Diana, and Neil Patrick Harris as Barry.

(Not a joke. DC is in fact doing this.)

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I haven't picked up Cooke's Spirit series yet.

That's one of those things I'm always meaning to do; time to get on the stick.

I know what you mean. I wish comics companies would offer digital subscriptions, for titles I want to read, but don't want to collect. The shelf space thing starts to really become a problem after a while.

Well, that would explain it.  :)

It probably bears mentioning that this is an animated project we're talking about. After Justice League Unlimited was canceled FOR NO GOOD GODDAMN REASON, several of these comics-based projects were announced. Let's hope that those responsible for that abortion Superman: Brainiac Attacks will not be involved.

By the way, has anyone mentioned "Planetary" yet? It's a great little comic that's hard to define.
