In a head to head battle of Disney and Will Ferrell, the former SNL alum is stronger with an impressive 33 million at the box office. 300 stays strong and TMNT has some serious catching up to do... oh yeah, some movie about Hogs seems to be rounding out the top five  :-[
As per usuall with this thread, read, cry, rejoice,   :P /   :-* ,  shake fist at hollywood, and discuss with fellow roundtable members. Also, new "budjet" feature this week (I dont trust it 100 percent as some of the numbers seem unrealist, but then again this is Hollywood?) .

Ferrell comedy skates to box office "Glory"
Sunday April 1 7:56 PM ET

Will Ferrell skated past his competitors to take the gold medal at the North American box office with his new comedy "Blades of Glory," according to estimates released on Sunday.

"Blades" sold $33 million worth of tickets since opening on Friday. The three-day sum beat the most optimistic forecasts by $3 million, said the film's distributor, Paramount Pictures.

The opening ranked as Ferrell's second-best, behind last summer's equally absurdist sporting romp "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which raced to $47 million during its first weekend.

Ferrell and Jon Heder ("Napoleon Dynamite") play the world's first competitive male pairs figure skaters in an irreverent comedy that enjoyed strong critical acclaim -- an increasing rarity for box office champs these days.

Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc., said the film cost just more than $60 million to make. About three-quarters of the audience was aged under 35, the studio said. The movie was a co-production between Paramount's corporate siblings DreamWorks and MTV Films.

Also new on the box office chart was Walt Disney Co.'s animated comedy "Meet the Robinsons," which opened at No. 2 with $25.1 million, roughly in line with relatively modest expectations. The action centers on a nerdy orphan who is whisked away to a goofy futuristic world in a time machine.

The film was extensively reworked by John Lasseter, who took charge of Disney's struggling animation operations last year after Disney bought the cartoon powerhouse Pixar Animation Studios, where he was the creative chief behind blockbusters like "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles."

Sander Morris Harris analyst David Miller estimated the film cost Disney about $52 million to make and $65 million to market and distribute. Disney does not comment on budgets.

Former chart-topper "300" slipped one place to No. 3 with $11.2 million. The four-week total for the gruesome ancient epic rose to $179.7 million. Just behind it was last weekend's champion, the animated "TMNT," with $9.2 million. The resurrection of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has earned $38.4 million after 10 days. Both films were released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

Disney's "Wild Hogs" rounded out the top five, slipping one place with $8.4 million. After five weeks, the comedy has earned $135.4 million.

"300" was the top film internationally, earning $30 million from 52 markets, Warner Bros. said. New No. 1 openings included Brazil and Argentina. The overseas total stands at $125.5 million, bolstered by sales in Britain ($17.6 million) and South Korea ($15.2 million). The film opens in Germany and Australia on Thursday.(Source: http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/ap/20070402/117555672000.html)

Yeah - TMNT against a much-anticipated Will Ferrel comedy is a hard front to fight in....

But I'm happy with the Top 5, actually.

Naw, Wild Hogs needs to die already. Something about that movie just bugs me, too many talentless hacks if you ask me. I even put it on the same level as Norbit (which is pretty high up their in the soul stealing department). I of course say all this with out ever having seen either Norbit or Wild Hogs, so technically I'm just talking out of my ass.
^^^^^^^^   :spammer:  ^^^^^^^^
I do however take solace in the fact that Norbit wont hit 100 mil ;D
Aside from that Skates of Glory is getting rave reviews, so I look forward to Will Ferrell's movie (I'm one of those people that own Anchorman AND Elf), so I'm glad it got the top spot.

AmandaGal

I like Anchorman, don't get me wrong, but I don't find it as funny as some people find it.  It's one of those movie that has achieved cult standing, like Napoleon Dynamite (another movie I liked but not enough to constantly quote and act out scenes from it).

Makes me want to never watch those movies again.  I know people who constantly talk about it and Anchorman. You just want to yell just shut up already.  We get it!  It was a funny movie for Christ's sake, shutup!
mike5150 how tall are you?.....in gallons?

What I DIDN'T expect was for 300 to overtake Ninja Turtles the week after...

sarcasm_made_Easy

QuoteCould be worse.  Do you remember people CONSTANTLY quoting Austin Powers when that came out? People who had no idea -why- the movie was actually funny?  My sister at one point saw a James Bond movie on TV (You Only LIve TWice) and said "Huh, they're copying Austin Powers."

and you remember when all those annoying people starting memorizing scenes from that silly comedy about a guy named python and his grail or something.  whats with those people?

J-Proof

hmmm - I kind of want the Turtles to see more lovin'.... It's sorta disappointing, as great a movie as 300 was, that TMNT is back beneath it =(

That being said -- I found Wild Hogs to be steadily entertaining. I liked that. It wasn't too edgy and had a decent theme recurring throughout -- so I found it to be a satisfactory movie.

Now, Anchorman is by and large my favorite recent comedy. Low brow humor is good sometimes!

When you work on movies for a living and went to school learning how special effects are done etc etc, you sort of need that whimsical disconnect to keep your cynical movie-going side subdued!

I'm pretty disappointed that the Lookout did not fair well.  While I have not seen the movie (I am basing my judgment on its critical success) I really hate to see that the general movie public would be willing to see Wild Hogs over something like this.

You know that all this success that Wild Hogs is getting will also spur multiple sequels.  Sigh.
Anytime someone offers you 10,000 to 1 odds, you take it.
Lets just say if John Mellancamp ever wins an Oscar, I'll be a rich man.

starfighter

The Lookout was only on 855 screens compared to the 3000+ for the top films so 11th isn't that bad for it.  I just wonder if it will get an opportunity to spread out more.
I saw it on Friday and it is every bit as good as Roeper said.  Who woulda thunk that the youngest alien from Third Rock would be a potential movie star.

Johnny_Short_Torso

I think Will Ferrell sucks ass. You could find a better comedian who has had a lobotomy and down syndrome.
