Joss Whedon's new Marvel TV show for ABC will be 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

QuoteYou can stop frantically guessing about what the super duo of Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios have up their sleeve for us next: ABC has just ordered the pilot for Joss Whedon's new Marvel TV show, "S.H.I.E.L.D."

"S.H.I.E.L.D." represents the first live-action Marvel TV show pilot to get the green light. According to Deadline Hollywood, Whedon will write "S.H.I.E.L.D." with his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, who collaborated with Whedon on "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" and "Dollhouse." Production on the pilot will begin immediately, with the Whedons, Jeffrey Bell, and Jeph Loeb executive producing.

"S.H.I.E.L.D." of course refers to the extra-governmental agency led by Nick Fury that brought together Earth's mightiest heroes in "The Avengers." S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for "Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate" or "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division," according to Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson, and the organization exists both in the Marvel cinematic universe as well as in its own Marvel comic books series.

Ever since it was announced that Joss Whedon had signed a three-year contract with Marvel Studios to not only write and direct "The Avengers" sequel, but also to develop a live-action TV show set in the Marvel cinematic universe, fans have been buzzing about what that TV show might be. Our personal favorite theories were a show based on "The Runaways" or a Black Widow and Hawkeye series.

There is no word yet on when "S.H.I.E.L.D." will premiere, nor which Marvel Comics characters will be featured in the series.

What'd'ya say: ...'older' episodes with Coulson?  ...current incidents including Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders)?  [Unlikely to get Johansson Black Widow or Renner Hawkeye though... and no way in hell could I see Jackson's Fury be on TV (unless a 'flashback' episode, in which he's just starting with the organization, and played by a different actor).]

It would be hard to schedule Smulders as a regular, what with her being a sitcom lead on another network and all, but I would watch the HELL out of a Coulson-centric show.

Oh, she's the girl from that show with Aly Hannigan and NPH in it?

Also, it's on ABC, so maybe this new relationship for Joss won't be as abusive as the last one.

Lucas: Want to cross post that ina new thread on the TV board? Unless one already exists but I didn't see it.

Good idea... done.

And yeah, between it being for ABC, and likely 'pre-approved' by Marvel/Disney/ABC, he's likely to be able to do whatever he wants pretty-much, without remotely as much fear of cancellation as if it was on FOX.  Of course, with it being an Avengers tie-in, unlikely it'll have viewership issues like his more unusual shows like Firefly and Dollhouse.  Happy to see that the Whedon brother and sister-in-law will also be joining him: they did good stuff on Dollhouse* (and Dr. Horrible).

Yes, Smulders is on 'How I Met Your Mother'.  [A show I watched for the first season, then realized there was nothing at all of interest to me and I'd only been watching it to see what Hannigan was doing post-Buffy.  Not really impressed.]

*Yes, the first season was slow, compared with the second, but Whedon had to BUILD Echo from the ground up, or no-one would have believed her abilities!  I was fine with that, as it was more subtle character-based events.  And yes, the second season was rushed, because he tried to cram about three or four seasons worth of events and information into them... one episode I remember thinking - while it was on - "shit: he probably originally had this as an entire SEASON in his head; no WONDER this episode feels too 'small' for all the info he's giving us!"

And I'm pretty sure his sister in law is the hottest of Cap'n Hammer's groupies in Dr. Horrible.

Well, tickets at my local theater are 10 bucks apiece, and I was thinking of going along with 3,999,998 of my closest friends this weekend.

So, finally took a pic of Ann in her Loki Charms shirt:

That's a happy girl right there. :)

I was on the fence on the level of awesome that shirt reached until I noticed it was "bifrosted" and that turned it up to 11.
