Getting the correct proportions on my BluRay player

Can anybody give me tips on getting the right proportions on my BluRay player when I play a DVD on it? I have a widescreen TV, and if the picture was supposed to be 4:3, it always seems to stretch it widthwise. Even when I have the TV setting on 4:3 aspect ratio, it puts the side grey bars, but chops the picture.

Check to see if your Blu-Ray player has a Zoom function. Also, is the signal from the player going through another device on the way to the TV? My A/V receiver has 1080p upconversion, and it stretches the picture on any 4:3 non-HDMI signal I feed it.

I will look for the Zoom function, thanks. The signal is going straight from the BluRay to the TV via HDMI cable.

What's the brand of player and TV?

They all have different names for what you need to set.

Usually it's a setting on the TV, the BD player usually only has one setting for the type of TV 4:3 or 16:9.

Also the names of settings don't always make a lot of sense.  On my Samsung TV to stop it from zooming in a little bit the setting is "screen fit", under settings called Zoom and 16:9, took me forever to figure out why my test patterns were missing the edges since I assumed 16:9 was not zoomed and screen fit was the "stretch out 4:3" setting (since that's usually what it's called on other brands).

check your remote control or TV for a hidden panel with advanced screen controls.  that happened to my dad.

The BluRay player is Sony, and the TV is Panasonic.

Sometimes there is a set on the TV for how to put input 1080p DVDs that needs to be adjusted.

For example, on my Panasonic TV, you have input settings and sometimes those need to be justed.   Same for your DVD player.

Sony is one that puts extra aspect settings on the player so finding the correct combination will take some trial and error.  And they are as bad as all the others in their descriptions of the settings.  They use "original" for stretching and "fixed" for non-stretching on some models.

Is your Panasonic TV one that has the aspect button on the remote?  If so it should make figuring out the correct combo easier.

Set one type of output on the BD player, play a 4:3 disc, then cycle through the settings on the TV.  If you can't get a 4:3 image change the setting on the BD player and cycle through on the TV again.  Eventually you'll find the proper combination of settings.
