I suppose you have a point, gbeenie, but most of the blame is on the actual trailer.  It just wasn't any good.

And the movie the trailer presented just isn't something I want to see.  And I'm just going by the trailer.  I don't need Superman Begins.  Hobo Clark thumbing and bumming his way around the world and trying to find himself isn't neccessary.

Also their big money shot was Superman flying.  *Yawn*  That's been done.  Iron Man flies.  Thor flies.  That stupid Hancock flies.  The Green Lantern.  The Human Torch.  Neo flies.  Hell, even Batman flies now.  Not to mention those douchebag kids in Chronicle.  We get it, we believe a man can fly.  What we need to see is a man punch something harder than anything has ever been punched and absolutely obliterate it.  We need to see Superman throwing buildings and mountains around.  And Superman eye lasers.  There's your get asses into the seats shot.  Superman eye lasers.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

The trailers for The Two Towers used music from Requiem For A Dream.

And about a billion trailers use the O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana.  It happens, it's not that big of a deal.

Exactly.

The trailer is clearly trying to show us that this is a different kind of Superman movie. The audience doesn't know what to make of it yet because, we're not supposed to know what to make of it yet. Whether that is a good direction for a teaser to take...probably not. But clearly they are holding a lot back, which is more preferable than showing too much. I agree, I don't really want to see a brooding Superman, and I especially don't need to see an origin story AGAIN. But, as always, I will hold off judgement until I see it (or at least see enough to adequetly warn me away).

I don't know if Hollywood realizes that a Superman movie is actually kind of a hard sell these days. I thought Superman returns was pretty OK, but most people were burnt by it. We need a trailer that says, "OK. Here's the Superman movie that RULES. Cast your doubts aside!" This was not that trailer.

Superman Returns' primary problem was that it was boring. Which is one of the worst things a movie like this can be. Aside from being insultingly stupid, like Superman IV. I agree, we do need a trailer that is just kickass action. If only to deliniate it from previous movies. I am fairly confident we will get that, though. Say what you will about Zack Snyder, but he does action very well (your tolerance for speed ramping may vary).

Just watched the trailer.  My 9 year old daughter heard it and asked if I was watching the Hobbit trailer.

I was okay with it as a teaser.  It didn't show much, which is good.  I also wonder if they are still working on most of the special effects.  What's funny is it reminded me of The Tree of Life.

gbeenie

It reminded me more than a little of the Superman Returns teaser which, regardless of what you thought of the final movie (I think it gets a bum rap), was a pretty great trailer.

I suspect the first full-length trailer for Man of Steel will be substantially more action-oriented.

Can I jump on the Superman Returns isn't so bad bandwagon?  It had flaws, yes, but I still enjoyed it enough to buy it and watch it now and then.

I am on the Superman Returns was stupid bandwagon!

Superman Returns for me was "Deminishing Returns". The first couple times I watched it I really liked it, but the more you watch the heavier the flaws get. I still think the effects were good, the action scenes were fun, and Spacey rocked it as Lex Luthor, but the movie just doesn't hold together well outside of that.

For other people, it was diminishing returns.

Superman Returns has good stuff in it, and it has an epic scope and I LOVES Spacey as Luthor (nice mix of the comic incantation with a touch of Hackman).  Unfortunately, I HATED the son of Superman stuff and can't get over the fact that he would have sex with Lois and just run out on her.  What a dick!  Really, I kept expecting that kid to be revealed as Brainiac.

It has some great scenes, but overall, I think it just doesn't work.  I don't have high hopes for Zach Snyder's take (though I'll be happy to be proven wrong), either.  Why is it so hard for people to get Supes right.

Who would you guys like to see direct a Superman movie?

Superman saving the shuttle had me feeling like I was 8 years old more than any movie since I was 8.

However it tied me down with adult stuff after that.  I did love that Marsden wasn't an arse but just a guy in a bad situation but the Super-kid and a few other things dragged this down for me.
