OK.. So I had my first job interview since 1995 and I think it went well..

I applied for a Quality Engineer position because of my 14 1/2 years experience (4 years aboard nuclear submarines from 1988-92 and 10 1/2 years from my former employer 1995-2006) and figured this would be the best field to get back into since my small buisiness is no longer self sufficient (economy, the F'n SC immigration law recently passed, etc.)..

The job pays $17 -$18 an hour to start and the interview went for nearly 3 hours! :o
1 hour or so for the initial interview at the company, another hour for touring of the facility (located just 1 mile from my home by the way) and about 45 minutes for a second interview including taking a psych test - 50 questions; answer as many as you can in 12 minutes (I got to 38)..

So yeah I take it they were pretty interested in me but I've been down that road before where you are offered a promotion, interviewed 3 times for the position only to be turned down.. :-\

Like I said, I haven't had a job interview in a long time and am curious to here your take on this and your job interview experiences.

I have a piece of advice,it is something I had to learn the hard way.  Whatever you do don't show up naked.  i don't care how behind you are with your dirty laundry it seems some people are a little prudish and that will all most always end the interview before they even talk to you.  I had to learn that the hard way.

Well I finally heard back for that job I put in for ..

I got a job, just not the job I initially put in for :-\
I put in for a Quality Assurance position (paid around $40000 per year) but wound up landing a Technician position instead.
The difference in pay is not to substantial (maybe $10000 a year difference)..
It's a dirtier job and I will train on first shift but will be working either 2nd or 3rd shift. I would prefer to work 2nd if given a choice cause I have a hard time sleeping during the day plus, the fact that we still have our home-based business and I don't need to be woke up for assisting clients nor fixing shit.
It is located just over a mile from my house so I won't be spending alot in gas!

I guess I should feel lucky that my first and only job interview so far and I land a job :o

But I have mixed feelings cause for the first time in 6 years I will no longer be self-employed full time. :(
Our business has taken such a hit the last 3 years and shows no signs of getting better..
It just sux to me that I have to go back to work 'for' somebody once again :-[

I will probably still check around from time to time to see what else is out there :-\

25% is not a substantial pay differance? And I've never heard of getting a job you didn't really interview for (although that could be just  not in my field).

Congratulations on getting a job. I definitely second the idea to occasionally look around, though.

Oh I guess it is a 25% difference.. It just didn't occur to me - I was basing it on an hourly rate :o
Yeah that is weird getting a different job I didn't apply for.. They're supposed to be sending me the job order number by email and then I'm supposed to apply for that one I guess :-\

Thanks! I'm hoping that I can find something where I can work from home (since I already have an established home based business) or maybe get on with the Post Office as a Rural Carrier.

Oh and I am scheduled to start by Monday Feb. 27 based on what they told me.

Well that is good news.  Not working for yourself does kind of suck.  My mom used to make enough money teaching piano that she didn't need to work another job but kids stopped showing up for their lessons so in 2004 she had to go work for Wal Mart. She makes a little more money but she was a lot happier when she was working for herself.

Hope this new job works out for you.

Thanks Doc! Yeah I really wish I didn't have to go back to working for someone again but times have changed and I gotta do it to keep afloat financially :-[

That's what's happened with us; clients have not been as frequent as they were in the past but at least I will have a steady income once again and should be able to rebuild my savings in a few years :)

The last time I interviewed, I applied for a job and had a phone interview with the people hiring. The next day, the company called me and said they wanted me to come in for a face to face interview. When I got there, the people that were on the phone with me met me and took me to a conference room and said they already filled their position but there were 2 other positions I would be a good fit for and I would be interviewing for those that day. As I'm interviewing for the second of the two, a girl pops her head in the conference room and says to the guy interviewing me, "Jack just quit, can we interview her after you?" I ended up getting "Jack's" job.
