Can't say that I'm surprised by the whole thing either.  Maybe if they weren't an evil empire, we wouldn't continuously portray them that way.  Just kidding.  Please don't bomb me.  Just kidding again.

QuoteYeah, if they made a movie about our American forefathers slaughtering native Americans and taking their land, we wouldn't give it another thought. Heck, we make 'em ourselves. :^)

actually we would give them millions of dollars to see it.  and do every time they do so.  The last samurai anyone?

What i find funny is they think that hollywood likes them less than our own government somehow or the two are collusion lol

Umm...how does the Last Samurai fit into that...last I checked it was a terribly inaccurate retelling of an actual samurai revolt in Meiji Era Japan?

sarcasm_made_Easy

yeah and what was tom cruises "emotional crisis"  the whole movie?  Oh he was so upset because the big bad evil american government slaughtered poor helpless native americans, And now look the poor japanese they are losing their honorable and cool way to the evil west, clearly the old samurai way was a better one it was WAAAAAY cooler.

thats the message i felt was CRAMMED down my throat after watching that movie.

Another problem the film ignores is that the samurai were fighting for a return to Japanese feudalism, a system which sounds great if you're one of the people at the top (like the samurai). It's kind of like the whole Dalai Lama situation; people who support that knob don't realize that the system he's trying to restore in Tibet is a virtual slave state for everyone EXCEPT the Lamas; now, I hate me some communism and all, but the answer to communism is not theocratic totalitarianism (a lesson a few folks in THIS country could stand to learn).

Hmm...interesting,,,,I didn't feel that preached to by "the Last Samurai"....the actual story it was based upon is extremely interesting, and honestly, the Meiji Era was not anything to smile about in comparison to the Tokugawa....

Hahahaha - Quick-witted chicks rock.

Good points of course. I thought that the movie was entertaining simply because dragon-shaped helmets riding gloriously through the morning fog is a killer image to keep in one's head ;)

Aside from that, the movie was quite fun, save for Tom Cruise who was unfortunately the main character. Ken Watanabe, though -- now he was amazing. The cherry blossom bit at the end roxxored.

I really don't mind historical innacuracies in movies that don't pretend to be historically accurate (ex: "300"). But this movie's producers touted that "accurate" this "detail" that angle in all "The Twenty" and bonus materials I'd seen so I was sort of peeved.

Btw - After I saw the movie with my then-gf, I looked at her and said: "Stef, if you EVER fall in love with a dude that stabs me in the neck with a flagpole I'll haunt you to your own grave...."

Yeah...Ken Watanabe is pretty much awesome in anything...

...hell, he was good in memoirs of a geisha

BBQ Platypus

Yeah, and he's got an awesome name, too.  It just rolls off the tongue.  "Ken Watanabe.............KE-nnnnn WatanAHbaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy....."

Oh, man.  SO cool......It's like, a bad-ass karate expert name or something.  w00t! :duel:

Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the movie. But I also knew what I was getting into.

Damn the movie was too good.. I honestly believe it'd be unriffable when the time comes for Mike and the gang... but then, I wondered about LotR before Mike and Kev tried their hands on Fellowship

I have to disagree. There were so many WTF moments that I think 300 would make a great riff. Everything about that movie was over the top. For starters, every hero was totally buff and manly. Every women was supermodel-thin with big boobs. The bad guys (without fail) were either disfigured or feminine. By the end I was laughing at it all, so just think what it would be like with Mike riffing.

J-Proof

Oh I totally came back after seeing the movie and told Mike that it could very well be an essential riff for our library once it's out on DVD.

I already know what the funniest part of the riff will be: the sex scene. Oh yes, as much as the guys in the theater hooted and hollered, it was directorially ridiculous =P

I couldnt get into it because of one thing.  Shogun.  Its easily one of my favorite books of all time.  AND i have the miniseries on dvd. lol,  i went expecting a shogun and got something much much different

macleod

Um....so why does 300 make you think "Shogun"?
