I don't think people are mad about the inaccuracies, but that there will be those that will believe that this is what really happened.

Think of the future generations that will treat 300 as fact because of its popularity and how easily people will digest a movie over a 800 page thesis.

Do I care?  Hell no.  I think it would rock for future generations to consider the past as kicky ass as 300.  Who wants to believe boring smart people.

Anytime someone offers you 10,000 to 1 odds, you take it.
Lets just say if John Mellancamp ever wins an Oscar, I'll be a rich man.

eh, i think i dont beleive this story as fact anyways.  militarily it makes no damned sense.  i know thats the whole point, BUT it just seems like the tale told is just a tad bit tall talesy.

sarcasm_made_Easy

i only have threehundred men versus, TOO many.  Although they do pick a good place to battle (tall talesy bit to add SOME beleivability),  I think they would be slaughtered.  Hell for all we know they had been captured in their sleep and WERE slaughtered as POWs.

Don't worry. As long as college professors don't accept graphic novels and movies as valid sources, students (young historians) are going to have to keep looking at valid sources to find out how it went down, and there, they'll find the truth, and fact and fiction remain seperate. They'll come for the 300, and stay for the Battle of Thermoplae! (sp?)

QuoteYeah, you really have to a) look at the geography and b) understand the mindset of Xerxes who wouldn't be able to let this kind of insolence stand.  To go around would be to admit fear, and an autocrat can't do that.

eh maybe your right, im just saying im not SURE i beleive the story.  Not that it matters, the movie might still be good.

sarcasm_made_Easy

well you go ahead and HOPE for a bad movie ill HOPE for a good one.

sarcasm_made_Easy

At this point...I don't care if it's Casablanca.  So, I guess I can hope for the best, and that you guys all have a good time.  A good, psychopathic, homoerotic time.  ;)

I know everyone insulted your "classicist" sense of what's historically accurate in a COMIC BOOK MOVIE, but to call it homoerotic without seeing it is going a tad far. When the fact of the matter is, maybe the stories of them fighting in battle naked are false, but they did often practice and perform sports in the buff.

I highly doubt the movie will be any more homoerotic than the actual history.

But I'm not complaining about the movie here, I'm complaining about self-appointed experts who have read a COMIC BOOK and think they know the "facts" about Greek history. I was correcting that misconception.  Sorry that gets your leather diapers in a bunch.

Damn right my diapers are leather.

Anyways sorry about the confusion. I know you've said you refuse to see it, and I did my own interpretation as to why. I understand what you mean about self-appointed experts learning from comic books, seems like anytime a "historical fiction" movie comes out there are always some that come out of the woodwork. But your description about the movie "featuring men in leather diapers" is about as far away from the reason that me, and the others here, even want to see the film. We take into consideration that sure, this is an ancient Spartan battle in comic book form, and so they are half naked. Whoopdie.

That would be like me taking your Star Trek avatar and condensing the entire show into it being about "Some guys who fly around in a space ship." That's a detail, to be sure, but it's not the subject of the series. I'm not going to see 300 to see guys in leather diapers. I'm going to see a violent, bloody, incredibly loud comic book movie, and I imagine that's what everyone is so excited about; NOT the "half naked guys in leather diapers" that you seem to be obsessed about.

Quote from: Imrahil on March 09, 2007, 07:25:31 AMthe point is that I'm seeing all these posts from "manly" men who are getting girly and lustfully excited over a movie featuring men in leather diapers.  But as you like it.

NICE arguement.

Perhaps you and the other 10 year olds can have a fun game of 'anyone who likes this movie is gay' on your on time?

...but I didn't want to be misrepresented as to what I was saying here either.

That's cool, I just wanted to check where your opinions were coming from. I can understand if you don't like uber violence and guys screaming at each other, or comic book movies, or what have you. But we do, so stop harshin' our mellow, man. :)

Yes.... well the point of this thread, before Imrahil got all worked up over the male nudity... was that the movie is beautiful, masterfully directed, and very exciting.  As one critic said, "...every frame is like a Boris Vallejo painting..."  I recommend it, very highly, not for historic value (!), but just for cinematic enjoyment.  Also, that if you don't like it you must be a big girl like Imrahil.

Thank you.  /bow

Not that I need any further convincing, but I KNOW some of you caught a 12 AM show. What'd you all think? (No spoilers yet!) :^)
