Thin Red Line.

Thank you.  I was going to mention it, but you already did.

I don't think it's the worst movie ever made, but it may be the worst critically-acclaimed movie ever made.  Deer Hunter is also near the top of that list for me.

In my opinion, the indy movies don't really surprise or shock me when they are horrible.  Plus there are so many, and there are so many ways to judge them, that it is near impossible to say which one is the worst.  I am a lot more intrigued by the horrible studio movies.  I am just stunned when I think about how many people had to say "yes" to something like Catwoman or Freddy Got Fingered.

I finally watched North, and I put it to you my peers that it may arguably be
the worst mainstream film of all time. What I find insulting is that North
has a hefty 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes... when classic films like
Heart Beeps has a 0%!!!!!

I looked up the wiki article for North, and under the "Reception" section it calls Richard Belzer a "comedian".  It turns out he used to be a stand up comic.  You learn something new every day....

I figure the only fair way to judge a movie is by intent. As much as I hate the Twilight movies, for instance, they weren't intended to entertain me. They were intended to entertain tween girls and maybe a few of their creepy moms, which they did. As far as I know, not many people for whom Twilight was intended disliked Twilight, so it did what it set out to do and gets a pass, even if it doesn't fall into my personal range of tastes. You can't blame the movie if it falls outside your particular realm of taste. I may not like any romantic comedies, but there have to be good ones, or nobody would be flocking to the theaters to see them.

If, however, someone tries to make a sweeping emotional drama, and everyone comes out of the theater laughing (I'm looking at you Wisseau) then you have failed at movie making and that was not a good movie.

at least they were laughing better than furious they wasted their time and money.

That's why I would have a hard time as a movie critic.  If I think a movie is stupid, I can't overlook that in order to properly gauge its intent.

That, and I have no skills at being a movie critic.

Personally, I think the worst movies are those unpleasant terrible movies that everyone seems to think are masterpieces of cinema.  Something shlocky like The Room or Plan 9 is at least so bad its good, and everyone KNOWS it's poorly made.  But you get dreadful crap like The Godfather which everyone oohs and aahs over and says "OMG PERFECT MOVIE", and that just makes it that much more unpleasant.

Really you think The Godfather is the worst movie ever made. Even if you did like the story you have to admit it is one of the best acted and well shot films ever made.

I don't have to admit shit.  I also hate Family Guy and Seth McFarlane, but I have to agree with him here.

I don't think it's the WORST movie, but it's the worst movie that is thought to be a good movie.

Thank you. It is on that basis that I said that Dark of the moon was a good movie.
What was the intent? To entertain people of both sexes and key demographics.
What was the intent? To vastly improve over ROTF. Call me fucking crazy, but I think
they succeeded.

What is the intent with a movie like North though? I honestly believe I could watch
it a hundred times and still find the intent indecipherable. I can't get any enjoyment
out of North whatsoever either. It meets four of my bad movie criteria: boring,
stupid, joyless and pointless.

Isnt the purpose to make money?
If that was the purpose, then it failed because North as I recall bombed big time. According to
wikipedia it made 7 million dollars back of it's 40 million dollar budget. True, that's arguably
"making money", but not after a 33 million dollar deficit.

The purpose of a movie is generally to tell a story.

The purpose of financing a movie is to make money.

North just may be up there among the worst movies ever.  Why?  Because it was made by a director--Rob Reiner--who should have known better (he'd already proven his skills by releasing several great movies before).  It featured actors like Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood who are too talented to be in such dreck.  But the movie itself was beyond awful.

I believe the intent of the movie was to teach kids that even though your parents may be imperfect, they still love you and your home is with them.

Nostalgia Critic did a pretty funny review of North.

That's not a bad message, but the execution of said message was obviously shit. The message
as the Nostalgia critic also said was pretty backhanded because Elijah Wood's character keeps rejecting
all these new families he comes across... what kind of message is that?

Even if it was correctly executed, I think it would still be very corny and schlocky.

Wow.  You need to take some pills and calm down or something.

If I had known saying that The Godfather was better acted and shot then Plan Nine would make you this angry I would not have said anything.

I'm old enough that he will always be a comedian to me.   It's still jarring for me to see him in Law and Order and Homicide.
