I NOW WANT ALAN TUDYK AS RED SKULL.

That is all.

Tripe

Will he be playing with little plastic Army Men? Maybe feeding them to Dinosaurs.

That would  be better than Cloverfield.

Joss Whedon directing The Avengers....

As Hollywood snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.....   :grr:

Yeah, God forbid there be any story or character development amidst all the running, shouting, and explosions. Michael Bay is much better suited to the job.

And Whedon would guarantee the former how?  He's a decent producer, okay writer (not much on any real science in his work) but he's a lame director, IMHO.

He's a lame director based on exactly one feature film, and you're complaining about the lack of real science from a guy who wrote about vampires and demons.

Yes...conveniently forget the existence of Alien Resurrection, "Firefly"/Serenity and "Dollhouse" in order to make your argument....

So you want the director of The Avengers to have a science background or something? I still don't see what that has to do with anything. It's not a biopic of the Curies, it's a superhero team-up flick. It sounds to me like you're grasping at straws trying your justify your desperate need to bitch about something.

Do you blame Whedon entirely for Alien Resurrection? How would you feel if Jean-Pierre Jeunet was directing The Avengers?

I agree with you!  Everyone knows that it takes hard science to explain how a steroid injected Nazi Puncher frozen in ice for sixty years, an alcoholic in a robot suit, a Norse thunder God, and a guy who becomes a giant green monster can function!  We don't need anyone with an understanding of comic books or the fandom to direct this one!

Also since you think Wedon should have to take all the blame for AR because he was a writer on it doesn't logic dictate that you should be given him praise for Toy Story.  After all if his writing is to blame for the failure of AR why isn't it just as much to blame for the fact that Toy Story was a good movie.  Also I would to point out that we have not seen one word of the script yet so it's a little early to complain about the movie wouldn't you say.

P.S Firefly and AR had more real science in them then any Marvel comic I have ever pick up.  I mean we know The Hulk and Iron Man are going to be in this movie is there anything about them that would work if you used real science?

P.P.s I guess it doesn't matter what he knows about film making or story telling because he is great with science Stephen Hawking would be your dream director for this movie.

Definitely pretty cool news. I'm a huge Whedon fan, Buffy is my favorite series in existence and I also love Angel and Firefly (& Serenity), and Dr. Horrible of course. Though Dollhouse was very bad in my opinion. And I do enjoy the Buffy comics that Joss writes.

But, none the less, Whedon isn't an all out 100% perfect "hell yeah" choice here to me. This is an insane project that is the most ambitious huge budget superhero movie yet, and simply put, Joss has never worked with a budget, and he's never done anything remotely like this. And much like the criticism Kevin Smith gets for being more skilled as a writer than a director, that might just apply to Joss as well.

Plus, has he ever directed something he didn't have a hand in writing? Though it's possible he will have input there.

All in all, good news, but while I love Joss, this is a big undertaking, its not an easy win.

A reasoned, rational debate.  How novel  :D

I'd say Joss's backgroud gives him a lot more heat coming into this than pretty much anyone else who's directed any of the Avenger's movies up until now, he knows how to work with multiple characters and REALLY understands pacing a big arc.  Besides possibly Bryan Singer, I can't think of anyone who's done anything even close to the style of film this is going to be.
