Plastic Self-Cleaning Duck

A full sized lead lined fridge would weigh thousands of pounds, kinda heavy for your floor boards....  Small ones are made for holding radioactive samples, 1/8 inch shielding makes a little 4 cubic foot fridge weigh over 300 pounds.

I wasn't aware lead could weigh that much. I mean, I know how heavy a fishing sinker can be..... Thanks for the info.

On the other hand, can't see a manufacturer putting more than a cursitory amount of lead - 1/32nd or less.  Just to be able to say it's there.  And appliances were much heavier back then.   ;)

The high density (almost 2X that of steel) is why they use it for sinkers and bullets.  Gold and Plutonium are even more dense, but kinda expensive, except for the military, they use depleted (non-radioactive) plutonium in special bullets and tank armor.

Edit: Opps, That's depleted Uranium that the military uses, almost as dense as Plutonium.

Getting off the whole refrigerator topic...

SIAFU ARE AFRICAN!, not South Amercian. And they look nothing like that. In western society they're better know as Driver Ants, one of the most dangerous varieties of animal on the planet.

It ticks me off that they took one of the most legitimatley badass animals currently in existance and totally Hollywoodized them. :grr:

Heh!  I remember seeing those in the movie and thinking "Aren't those in africa?", but by the time the movie was over I had forgotten about checking them.  So much else was obviously wrong in the movie, it seemed pointless to pursue more of them.

Huh, I didn't realize they were a real type of ant. I just thought they made bigger ants than really existed for their silly action sequence.

Oh, and DRIVER STOP!

I should have known this whole thread would just be complaints about the perfectly entertaining fridge scene.

Hate to break it to you, but NOTHING IN THE MOVIE IS POSSIBLE. Indy's hat staying on is impossible. A man his age doing half of what he did is impossible. Knocking the head off a metal statue by hitting its base is impossible. It's a dumb, fun movie based on other dumb, fun movies and movie serials. It is not supposed to be any more realistic than Star Wars. It's about a part-time teacher who uncovers paranormal artifacts.

As for them trying to be entertaining, god forbid. If the movie was exactly like the first one, people would have found it incredibly boring. People who hate the movie couldn't get past the fact that it didn't give them back their childhood, and their joy died when they realized someday they will be as old and useless as Harrison Ford. If you can get over that and just enjoy enjoyment, then you can watch movies again. Until then, you are hereby confined to the library.

bratpop, as dismayed as I am to find this thread degraded to pointless nitpicking, I'm afraid your rant managed to top them all.

I really liked the part where the old guy got in the fridge and then got exploded by a nuke. That was awesome. Did anyone else think it was awesome?
I try not to question the "rule of cool" because, realistic or unrealistic, it's just plain fun.
When I find myself worrying about radiation, G-Forces, and other science facts, I just say to myself "It's just a movie. I should really just relax."
But then, analyzing the logical discrepancies in any work of fiction can be just as fun as suspending your disbelief, so what the hell, have at it;

My biggest, oddest pet peeve: why does Colonel Doctor Kutyaveenaov (I forget her real name) only use her vast psychic abilities once, to open a damned door? Couldn't she have, like, exploded Indy's heart after he was no longer useful? Force-choked Mutt during their little roadside duel and ended the damned eight-hour chase scene about five seconds after we grew tired of it? Why didn't her vast mental insight help her realize that she had a hideous haircut? I guess they pay their barbers with vodka in the great USSR.

She looked damn good in those pants though. ;)
"Hey, you kids! Those boxes are for shipping! Not for creating a world of pure imagination!"
