It's not just that (although that is staggeringly stupid), it's that the edit makes it so that he catches a wrench.

Yeah, it's just an editing gimmick.  Editors do stuff like this to be like, "OH!  See what I did there!?"  But in actuality, they're just showing off, drawing more attention to themselves than the scene.  Montages are like the editor's solo.  Sometimes they just can't help but get a little too showy sometimes.

I figure the studio is looking at the effects in these movies like the BBC used to regard the original version of "Doctor Who"'s effects...

They're made largely for people who aren't familiar with state of the art effects so they can go cheap and they probably won't notice..

(And before anyone gets upset about what I'm saying about original DW....I LOVE original DW and always thought that it was clever how they could make some bright green material and bubble wrap look like a blob swallowing a guy's arm in The Ark in Space and so forth...plus the stories were the point.)
