I would've liked to have thrown some more Hard Rock (even some Heavy Metal) into my 80's list cause I listened to a variety of music back in the 80's (including Techno - But Not No got-dern Cuntrey Meusic Neither!)

There are few Maiden songs that got pretty high on the UK charts.
Yep! Them and Metallica I really wanted to add to my list but I didn't think they'd qualify :-\

People are dumb and wrong.  There's also this.

(Snipped)

Try getting it out of your head for the rest of the day. I dare you.

Hey, I still have Billy Ocean stuck in my head from my earlier mention of him. Seal can't  budge the loop of "Hey! You! Get into my car!" from my brain.

Sadly their highest position is just outside the window for this list.

uh... weren't we going with top 40? if so, then there's a dozen and a half to choose from. ???

I think as long as they charted in the top 40 for any given week, they're fairly memorable. I don't think this list has as much freedom as the guilty pleasure list, with plenty of songs that will appear on many, if not most, lists. There will be some obscure and lesser known in the States tracks, but it's not like we're going to see Ultravox's Vienna running away with the whole thing to the dismay of everyone.

though it totally should...

Funny you should mention that song. I never actually heard it until it was on an '80s compilation I bought in the early '90s.

My list should be every U2 single that charted in the '80s just to piss off the Bono haters planet Earth. ;D

There. I fixed it for ya.

Old joke time:

Q. What's the difference between Bono and Jesus?

A. Jesus doesn't think he's Bono.

I think we need official rules first. For those of us who don't really remember the '80s, we don't want to see a bunch of obscure deep cuts that you old foagies remember that happen to have charted for week. For example, I know there's a bunch of Devo fans here, but just put "Whip It" and leave it at that. I know it's not their best song, or indicative of their work as a whole, but this should be a list of songs that the rest of us recognize. Let's settle that decades-old dispute of "Is Hungry Like The Wolf better than Take On Me?"

What you are describing is to use only the yearly top 40 charts for eligible songs.  That would kill 95% of my current list.  That would also be extremely boring.  I could care less to see a list made up entirely of clichéd overplayed '80s songs such as the three you mentioned.

The Union of The Snake is better than both.

I was gonna say that The Sun Always Shines On TV was better than both.  Maybe we are both right.

I'm partial to "Save A Prayer" myself.

I genuinely don't understand the Bono hate. He's trying to use his fame and money to help people. What an asshole. Maybe he should shoot himself so poser teenagers can wear his face on t-shirts a decade later.

The hardest part will be limiting it to twenty-five.

I like how Beavis and Butthead refer to Bono as 'Boner' in their one skit ripping on a U2 video :D :D

"You're son sure does sing well. That's my Boner."  :rimshot:

I rarely understand any intense hate for U2 or Bono. Or, on an unrelated note, Coldplay.

I have my "baseline" 25 already.  I'm sure I will come up with quite a few more over the next week or so and have to adjust my list.  I've already said that I'll be waiting until the final day to submit my list, for that very reason.
