I learned Nothing from this B.S. excuse of a movie :grr:

Other than the guy with the camera gave me motion sickness :speechless:

David

I learned that the Audacity we all know and love is actually Winamp circa 1997.

(Was that Audacity's big screen debut?)

I loved seeing that on my screen.

I learned how to pronounce Mike's name.

I learned that Feist is really into beading.

I learned that demons need Ritalin.

I learned that Audacity is everywhere!

I learned that Columbus in Zombieland reminded the crew of Michael Cera too.

I learned that average 20-somethings can afford a nice home in San Diego while working jobs of no paticular definition, and selling in-home trout lures.

I learned that ghost-demons leave footprints.

I learned that interestingly comely young women love douchebags.

... Ok that one I've known for a while.

Darth Geek

I learned that a woman who has lived with being bothered by a demon since she was a kid thinks a Ouiji board is horrifying.

I learned that the ghost of ET is kind of a dick. (seriously, why no ET riffs during the footprints in the powder scene? They look like his feet. Or Gremlins, too.)

I learned a new appreciation for Harold P. Warren.

This anecdote doesn't really fit here but I didn't want to start an entire thread for one comment so here goes.

I attended the American Film Festival in LA last November.  This annual event is where 90% of the indie films in the world find world wide distribution.  400 distribution companies attend every year looking for new product to distribute in their respective markets.  Indie filmmakers like me who are looking to move their films have to pay $900 per badge just to walk in the door, and then you still have to get appointments with companies on your own.  The badge price is so high just to keep the broke losers who made a movie on their Handycam from clogging up the works.

Anyway, the point is, Paranormal Activity, being an indie movie that'd opened just a few weeks before the AFM to much excitement and many ticket purchases, was a prime talking point throughout the week.  Other indie filmmakers were name dropping it like mad in such ways as "hey, if you think that piece of crap made a lot of movie, check OUR movie out!  Heh."  (actual quote heard while waiting for a meeting)

This movie was also a sore point with several distributers I talked to.  I never name dropped Paranormal Activity because I didn't want to sound like every other person they saw, but it came up a couple times to much irritation.  One distribution was pissed at how it was being marketed as the most profitable movie of all time because it only cost $15,000 to make.  "Yeah, but then Dreamworks put $200,000 into post production and spent millions on marketing.  Funny how those numbers never get mentioned when talking about this film."  And yes, he had personally passed on this movie twice but it insisted this wasn't sour grapes.  "If we'd have released it, we wouldn't have made nearly that much.  We're a middle level distributor, they're freaking Dreamworks.  They could release my last home movie and make $20 million."

Personally, I'm glad to see any indie movie make it big.  I was glad when Blair Witch made it big and I'm glad this one did.  It gives hope to the rest of us.  I just wish one of these indie movies to make it big was actually ... you know ... watchable.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought she was kinda hawt.  I get so sick of seeing Hollywood stick insects sucking up all the movie roles so we never get to spend an entire movie with a baby who got back.  ROWL!
"Did she just say Chipping?"

OmegaR!

I learned what to say if a Cthulhu gets in the house

I also learned that Demons keep pictures safely stored in the attic

She was a perfectly normal/average looking young woman.  Maybe a bit of "heft" to her, but overall I think she was a good-looking woman with nice knockers.  (There, I said it.)

Yeah, I thought she was cute, too. Ironically, I thought her friend that came over to visit looked more like the typical stick figure Hollywood actress.

You said it and my boyfriend said it countless times  throughout the whole movie. More like Paranormal Boobtivity, amirite? *high five*

I learned that I have a theory: anyone else think that people around these parts have a tendency to smacktalk a movie just because it gets riffed? I realize that some people just flat out don't like a movie and that taste is incredibly subjective, but it seems sometimes that around here it's similar to hipster backlash (suddenly hating a movie once it's popular) but more along the lines of sucking up to the riffers because they didn't like it (or seemingly didn't like it). It happened with Drag to Hell and a bunch of others. There seems to be a need to declare "This is the worst movie of all time! Glad you're putting it in its place!" and sometimes it's a bit disingenuous.

I've put next to no thought in this. I like to think that comes across very clearly in the above paragraph.

Maybe that does happen, but I can assure you that my disdain for Drag Me to Hell had nothing to do with it being riffed and everything to do with it being a horrible, cliched movie that gets heaps of undeserved praise.

As for Paranormal Activity, my only thoughts are that the movie is more boring than suspenseful, and that Micah's attitude absolutely kills any suspense that may have built.

Courtney

Your hatred seemed genuine (and dark. We may need to look into hypnosis to see if you were bad touched by a CGI goat in your childhood). I'm talking about the others. Often it's newbs who come out of the woodwork only to praise the guys for knocking a movie down a peg, but it's every movie. "Yeah! Fuck Casablanca! You guys are awesome!"

EDIT: OH HAI, 4,000 posts!

ShadowDog

I think you're right in general, Courtney.  And to be perfectly honest, Drag Me To Hell was like a 45 if we're ranking movies from 0 (worst ever) to 100 (best ever.)  It had it's moments.  I think the biggest problem with it for me was just a matter of tone.

But this.  This movie.  Wow.  Maybe I'm grading on a downward curve because I HATE HATE HATE the POV handheld camera genre, but boy did this one suck tons of ass.  LMFAO

No freaking doubt!  I loved the line mocking her for this.  I can't remember the exact words now but it was saying what I was thinking.

I'd agree. There are a lot of films that if I graded them, I'd give a "C" for "Okay, but not great" or films that I think that "that was a good film, but you could make a lot of jokes about it"  that become "The worst film ever" in these forums. And frankly most of us have seen much, much worse films.
